newbie here - electric motor issues

I just picked up a well used Parkzone Stryker with a Turnigy 2835 -2700 motor, 30 amp eflite esc and I am using thunder power 3S 30C 2200 lipo and a 6X4 pusher prop.

When I throttle up to about 50% the motor stops and squeals, an electrical squeal. To be honest, I'm not really sure if the squeal itself is coming from the motor or the ESC.

If I throttle up to full power it continues to run. If I go half throttle and it 'stalls' then I continue to full throttle it starts up again.

Also the motor does get quite hot in a very short time period (mere seconds)

Is this motor toast or is it the programming of the ESC?
It is a 2 pole motor so I set the timing to low and that did not do anything.
The low voltage cutoff is at the stock 74% and that cannot be it because it exhibits the same behavior on 2 brand new fully charged batteries.

Thanks for any guidance/advice/suggestions

Edit: I just noticed that the shaft has about 1-2mm of play longitudinally. This seems a bit much to me

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

Sounds like a bearing in the motor, try a small drop of 3in1 oil and see if it stops. Not a cure but just to see if that's the problem.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

Bad bearing it sounds like, you should have 0 shaft movement.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

I sounds like a timing mismatch between the motor and ESC, (and yes, the noise is coming from the motor. It is the ESC that generates the signals, but the motor bell that does the physical movement to create the sound waves).

For some reason it seems most serious at half throttle, but the fact the motor gets extremely warm is indicative there is something serious happening here throughout the range.

Most stock ESC's default with a mid timing setting. Same as with ignition timing in a combustion motor, increasing the timing will add power, but at a cost of shorter flight times. Your dropping it to low may have been the wrong direction. That extreme heating you mention is indicative the current supplied by the ESC is simply turning to heat, rather than producing power. An improper propellor, (too aggressive pitch or large diameter) or anything that loads the motor up too much and pulls it down from the rather narrow peak efficiency RPM range will cause this to happen.

If timing does not solve the problem then I would assume you have a faulty motor, ESC or match between the two. In some cases the two simply will not work together.

Since this sounds like you are in a pusher configuration, if the mounting is standard with the prop mounted to the bell, the bell should be pushing down onto the core/windings, rather than trying to escape with the prop. Not critical and in fact a safer setup. Unless the bearings are pooched and allowing the bell to touch the core housing you should be fine. However, another source of problems can come if the screws used to mount either the prop adapter or motor to the plane are too long they can physically interfere with bell rotation and/or dig into the motor windings.

p.s. I doubt this would be the case since the effect would likely show up through the entire throttle range, but a common fault seems to be weak solder joints at the motor/ESC connectors. You would have to cut the heat shrink protective cover away to check and repair if this is the case.

+1 on the timing. What he said /\

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

hmmm, thanks for all the input - same results on all the timing settings for the ESC.
I did just find some info that I have to set the throttle range for the ESC, which I have not done so will look into that. the bearings feel quite good, aside from the longitudinal play, that is.

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

I assume the motor spins freely when not under power.
Try a different ESC or try the ESC in a different motor to check where is your problem.
The Throttle range will not do anything and it is clearly a timing issue as stated above. The frequency of the electrical field is not in sync with the spinning coils and as mentioned the timing has to be adjusted.
Although shaft play is not good I don't see much effect due to longitudinal play.
If you increase the throttle slowly you have the same problem?

Re: newbie here - electric motor issues

I have been able to increase the throttle slowly and get it up to WOT without the problem developing. But if I go to half throttle quickly it almost always stops and squeals.
I didn't even think to try that esc on another motor - I have an eflite park 480 that I can try it on and will report back.

The motor turns smoothly and freely when not under power. I opened it up and did not see anything amiss in there so maybe it is the ESC.

I have another ESC and motor on the way from Great Hobbies which should be here early next week and give me more testing options.
