oil ratios in our engines?

Been reading some stuff re changing oil ratios in engines (specifically the DA's).

WHat is the concensus? I have a used DA100 I bought in 2008 and was told to run Amsoil 100:1 - now they are saying use a different oil at a higher oil ratio...

So, what's the deal?

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

Some of my friends were using Amsoil at 100:1 and noticed a serious carbon build-up when they took the exhaust off, enough to make them stop using it. Everyone I know now uses Redline racing oil at 50:1. I'm still running Penzoil air cooled as most of my engines are still on break-in, then I'll also switch to Redline.
Hope this helps!

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

Amsoil fell out of favor with DA and many others at the very lean ratios. Excessive wear and carbon are what I've come up with after reading dozens and dozens of oil 'wars'.

Current favorites on many forums: Redline (40-50:1), Stihl Ultra HP, Bel HR1, Motul. I'm lovin' the Redline right now as are many. But I wouldn't hesitate with any listed above.

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

Hi

I use RedLine at 50:1 , just cann,t get myself to that 100:1 . And I,ve also keep an eye on that 100:1 deal , and in many case, s ( not the box ) , it,s not all what it,s put up to be . If it,s not one problem it,s another .

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

Hey Andrew. I have used Penzoil at 40:1 in all my gassers including my DA 150 and never had a plug foul or any other problem. I'm just changing out my plugs after last season (new plugs at the beginning of every season) and the plugs have just a little carbon on them (smooth coating that rubs off) and clean electrodes, so I'm happy. I also only use high octane fuel and have two filters in my fueling container which I think makes a difference. I may have to switch to another oil but will not go beyond 50:1 no matter what the "experts" say.

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

Now, I am not sure what oils I can buy up here in Timmins... but I do have the Amsoil - which happens to be "Amsoil Sabre Professional" 100:1 pre mix, but states on the bottle its fine to use a richer mix.

Can I run this at 50:1 and be fine? Or should I not run my DA100 on it at all?

Like I stated, I was running this oil as when I bought it thats what I was told to run, at the 100:1 mix.

I run Penzoil 2 stroke air cooled oil in all my other gasoline burning engines for the record, or sometimes some synthetics but never at such a lean ratio.

I was more concerned that DA themselves seemed to have switched their recommendations.

Check out the motorcycle shops for high quality 2 stroke oils, can't go wrong with Motul or Belray.

I run Motul road race at 40:1 in my DA 100, It's very clean after 3 seasons. My other engines all get turbine oil

Re: oil ratios in our engines?

I can't believe I'm posting in an "oil war" thread

This can be a Chevy vs Ford debate from what I've seen in the past. Regardless, here's my take on it.

I've got two DA100's, both of which were purchased used. Can't comment on how many flights on them before I got them but, since I got them one has ~400 flights and the other ~200 flights. Late last season, I ran one of them out of gas while hovering (twice!!) and thumped it into the ground pretty hard. Therefore I decided to send that one down to DA for a check-up. I figured, if I'm sending one down, I might as well send both down. DA did there job and inspected both. Other than a hub being "out of round" both engines were fine. No excessive piston wear or scoring of the jug.

Given those results, I'll continue to run what I have been for the last ~600 flights. Amsoil Sabre at 100:1

Just my $.02
