Re: Rookie Pilot Maidens his First Plane... hilarity ensues!
Ice drinking is, some days, much more accurate...

Re: Rookie Pilot Maidens his First Plane... hilarity ensues!
Got out today with the Supercub for a more proper maiden flight- ran through 2 battery packs and had a blast! 3 crashes, none severe, the worst being hung up in some small poplars after being blinded by the sun. Next best would be when I got cocky and tried to snap an action shot with a Blackberry at about 30 feet off the deck. Lesson learned: get a cameraperson!
I will solemnly attest in a court of law as to the toughness and durability of these planes. Some minor chewing of the wing thanks to poplars and a cracked cowl a la cold temps (about 0C) was the worst of the damage. Some minor chewing of the prop tips also, thanks to tipping on the ground. The wind was mostly decent, but started to pick up, and a couple gusts resulted in dumping it on the nose just as the wind picked up and the throttle open. Again, nothing severe, I kept flying it until I ran out of juice. The third 'crash' was more a controlled landing. ESC cut the motor and left me with controls, and was bringing it down nicely into a strengthening headwind, and I lost direct eyesight when my truck got between us; it came down on the wrong side of the snowbank, no damage just some snow packed in the cowl. Had quite a few admirers take time out from the quads and ice fishing, apparently there used to be a healthy group of fun-flyers here years ago; there's a few guys at work that I've found out are closet RC'ers, and there's some interest in starting a club.... Had a blast, was too gusty for the SR120 (but I did try)! Love my Cub!

That is great to hear, Mark!
These things happen when you are self-taught. No doubt you will have other mishaps, but as your skill improves, you will have less accidents. And of course, the only way yo improve your skill is to fly more, so keep at it. As you have discovered, that is a pretty durable plane. And the other beauty of the super-cub is replacement parts are relatively inexpensive. You can repair it as well, so that when you reach a point that repairing it is out of the picture, you just put on a replacement part and continue flying! |

Re: Rookie Pilot Maidens his First Plane... hilarity ensues!
Now that is just depressing... the video, I mean, even crashing was fun! And as I said, the last one, no power just controls, was picture perfect until it came down on the other side of a snow bank... no damage, not bad for a controlled crash!
No fish like that here, I'm having to wait until my fishing trip to the coast in August!
