A friend has a 78 and had problems with it running erratic. The distributor replaced the carb with a new improved one that fixed the problem, it now runs great with plenty of power.

no problem with my 28 (as long as you know how to set up the needles--somewhat different than normal but once done, runs fine).

NO PROBLEM

All the new ones run as good as any..the ones with the older style carbs where some of the problem ones..use low nitro for optimum results..much like MVVS OR ROSSI ..

My tip to get the needles set up right: once you've broken it in, set the needles up with HALF a tank of fuel (not a full tank).

I've found (mine anyways; others have suggested this method and it worked for me) that it tends to lean out in the bottom 1/2 to bottom 1/3rd of the tank if the needles are set when the tank is full.

Reason: I'm assuming that there's a bit less back pressure when set up at 1/2 tank so the end result will be: slightly rich to start, gradually leaning out (not enough to worry about) to when empty.

MDS

I have two MDS 68's. One's in a .90 size Pitts, and another is in a Top Flite P-39. One is stronger than the other, (no idea why) but both are reliable and have given sterling service.

So, how does one tell the difference between the older style bad carbs and the new style good carbs? I have a never run MDS .28 (no box or papers) and I'm not sure which carb it has.
