Re: BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread
I have attached a copy of the 30 A ESC manual just in the event someone else may need to reference it.

Re: BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread
I think my starboard motor is binding. I did a factory reset on both ESCs and retested the motors, the starboard one stills spins down faster and runs slower than the port motor.
When I take the motor out & spin it by hand, it feels like it is rubbing and there is a metal scraping sound when I listen carefully. I have sent another email to BH support, let's see how they handle this issue.

Sometimes the customer support guys can be slow, but I will persist in getting a new motor out of them.. I am hesitant about flying until this motor issue is resolved.......

Re: BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread
Max,
you maiden your P-38 yet? I am waiting for 1 of 2 things. Either BH will get a new motor back to me or the two, 200 watt bell motors I ordered from HobbyKing will get here......... Either way, I am grounded until I get the motor issue resolved.

Re: BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread
I am going nuts here. Plane has been ready to go for 2 weeks now.
I have been waiting for a REASONABLY nice day to fly. Weather here has been crap. Yesterday was AWESOME but I already had other commitments (I was flying, but we had a Boy Scout day at our field and I spent the whole evening flying with the scouts) Soon..... |

Re: BlitzRCWorks Silver P-38 Lightning Build Thread
Well, we finally got a nice day (That I was free )
and I finally got to maiden my P38. All I can say is WOW~!~!~! It flies like a dream. And it looks great in the air. One of our club members took some GORGEOUS aerial photographs, which I will post as soon as he emails them to me. I also have a video I will also post in a short while, I just have to download it off the camcorder and edit it to a reasonable length. There were a few snags, so I will list them. 1) On its maiden, the P-38 flew great with all control surfaces at neutral, other than a few clicks of up trim were necessary for level flight. Takeoff roll was short, as predicted. 2) Aileron are sensitive. This is especially apparent on landings when gusts will cause the 38 to wing wobble at low speeds for landing. One has to be very delicate on the controls to not over-correct. The throws should not be adjusted because the roll rate is good, but needs to be softened about the center, so I set aileron expo to 60% and it is really docile now. I might dial that back to 50% because I find I need just a bit more response at slow speeds now, but other than that it handles great. 3) there is a slight CG shift with the retracts in the up/down position. For now I simply compensated with trim. 4) Make sure the retracts are fully locked in the down/up position. I thought I had mine set up correctly but on the fourth flight the nose-wheel folded back slightly on landing. No big deal but it caused the left prop to touch the ground. Again, no big deal but the prop striking the ground caused the prop/spinner to spin on the shaft which essentially tightened the prop on the shaft, and moved the spinner back enough to jam itself on the cowl. This was easily fixed at teh field., The shop correction would be to locktite the jam nuts on onto the prop shaft to keep this from happening again. 5) the nose gear servo crapped out on me on my 6'th flight. I will replace that with a higher strength, metal gear servo while it is on the workbench. FLIGHT DATA RESULTS On the fourth flight I flew with my Eagletree Data Logger. Results are as predicted for my initial bench test. while the P-38 flies OK on 1/2 throttle, I found that the ideal cruise power was at 60-70% throttle. The resulting graph shows my flight of 6 minutes on the timer. This flight consisted of circuits with low passes at full power and loops/rolls on the downwind legs. (The low passes are where the P-38 shines, it is a real crowd pleaser!!) On cruise power, the graph shows the 38 pulls about 12 amps, and the full power passes were about 26 amps. 6 minutes on the timer yielded Approx 1400mah total power consumption. I am confident I can add 1 or 2 minutes more to the flight time, provided the pack stays cool. My flight pack after 6 minutes was barely warm to the touch. On this day I only used a 2200mah30C Lipo. Next time she flies I will try a 20C battery and see what happens to the temperature of the pack. Conclusion: I LOVE THIS BIRD!!! it is such a pleasure to fly and those twins have such an nice hum as it flies past on the deck!!! I will post more in-flight photo's and a vid soon! |
