I had a 42% Dalton 260 with DA150 on pipes for a season and absolutely loved it also!! It flew like it was on rails!

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Okee Dokee !!!!!

This thread got off to a pretty slow start. I brought this kit home a few weeks ago and not much happened from there except for a few brief conversations with GSXR about what he wanted for the build.
There were a couple little wrinkles. But things are ironed out for now and I am able to move forward.
That and I have been doing a boat load of flying lately.
Seriously cuts into build time, But thats a good thing right ????

Went over the lower half of the fuse. Things are straight and look pretty good.
The Daltons have some unique features that are pretty cool.
First, the front half of the fuselage is interlocking ply. Everything builds up by applying glue and putting all the the tab lock pieces together. It makes for a nice straight and strong fuselage skeleton to build up from.

Then there are plywood formers all along the fuselage.
The bottom of the fuselage is done with 1/4 inch square stringers. Strong and light. The Dalton Fuselage is much much quicker to frame up than a Carden.
Once the formers and stringers are all dry, you then laminate the fuselage sides with 1/16 Balsa. Fuselage is light and strong

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

There are some nice touches. The switch locations are pre cut in the plywood sides. Now before anyone complains....... There are 2 different locations to choose from on each side of the fuse. So you have ample choices to pick from.

Same with the fuel dot locations. There are 2 on each side. You cna install fuel and smoke on the side of your choice. All that is needed is to cut the balsa that is laminated over the holes in the plywood sides.

Here are some shots of the motor box area. You can see how everything is interlocking

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

The next thing I have done is the hatch hold down tabs and main rails.
I will be able to set the hatch formers and possibly the stringers tonight.
Like the belly, the top hatch is formers and stringers. Were as th Cardens are laminated foam.

The rails were glued to the tabs the ohther night. So the clamps are all coming off tonight when I start the formers
I will also be pinning all the tabs and rails to help insure they don't seperate in time.

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Brad,

Are the stringers balsa or pine?

On my 33% SD Yak ARC it came with 5mm balsa stringers but there were two sections on the bottom of the fuse where they were punched through and broken. No fault of shippin. it had to have been done at the factory during the packing stage as there was nerry a scuff on the box it came in let alone puncture that would have caused that damage but that's another story.

Long of the short of it is I contacted Don's Balsa and he custom cut me 5mm sq spruce stringers. When I had removed all the bals stringers and wieghed them the cut out balsa stringers vs the new spruce stringers going in the wieght penalty was only 1.8oz gain going from balsa to spruce.

The big benifit was the amount of added stregth that spruce provided to the structure. Could p/u the plane by the bottom every time never having to wory about breaking stringers.

Re: 3B -- Dalton 35% Extra 260 Build

Here is a shot of the landing gear plate.
It is 1/4 inch thick and tab locked into the motor box assembly.
There are also 90 degree aluminum supports that are screwed ontot the landinggear plate and motor box sides to help distribute the force of a not so great landing
