Quadra 42

I have a Quadra 42 with a rewind (spring) starter. My question is, does the spring and clutch need to be lubricated? If it requires lubrication, what kind, (oil or grease) how do I do this?

Thanks

Mike

Very definitley needs to be lubed........I used to use white lithium grease..at least once a season depending on how much you fly.
The main part of the spring mechanism is a sleeve with one way bearings imbedded and that is the item that needs the lube,as well as any other surface running metal to metal. It means pulling the engine to do the job of cleaning and regreasing but dont neglect it...........I have seen these mechanisms seize solid and stop the engine in mid air for lack of lube.

Thanks Kevin, I'll take your advise and lubricate it today while it is still on the test stand

I havent messed with one of these spring starters in a while but a few other hints come to mind.
The spring is anchored by one of the screws that hold the mounting cup to the back of the engine.Make sure this is very tight and use washers to make sure it doesnt come loose,
Dont wind the spring any tighter than is necessary to pop the flywheel by the coil fast enough to get a good spark. That spring is under a lot of force when you wind it and I have seen them break or wear out the slot in the end of the crankshaft if you overdo it.
I dont know where Kippens is(bet you dont know where Porcupine On is either ) in relation to St. John,s but Carl Layden flys Quadras and can help you if you need hands on assistance.
