43% Edge 540

So my edge is finally flight ready again, and I thought I'd post up a few details. I test flew yesterday and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

PAU 43% Edge 540 powered by a Plettenburg Predator 37/6 turning a 28x13 3 blade. Schulze future 40.303 speed control fed by a 14s 11600mah pack configuration.

Test flight was a total success save the discovery of a bad cell in one pack upon landing. Disappointing because I'd hoped to drag the big girl to a fun-fly or two shortly and a replacement pack will take a few weeks, but I couldn't help but be happy in light of everything else.

I've not tached or checked the peak amperage/voltage myself but Plettenburg says the combo is good for about 17000 watts, and results from similar set-ups have been posted elsewhere that back that up and list a static rpm of just north of 6800.

The combination weighs ~41 lbs ready to fly (fishscale), which is about a pound lighter than the previous gas set-up was dry (Evolution 116).

Needless to say this system blows the 116 out of the water, and I'd be tempted to claim that it would out perform a 170 class engine as well but I've never had one and youtube is the only place I've watched them.

Because of the bad cell it's difficult to guess what flight times are going to be like based on this one five minute test flight. It was flown relatively gently and upon landing two packs were half or less depleted, one was 80% depleted , and the bad pack was essentially fully charged except for one cell. Based on that I'm hopeful that flight times can be stretched to 10 minutes if desired, and that 5 minutes of very aggressive flight will be safe.

A friend recorded, edited, and posted some video of the test flight for me. Nothing fancy flight-wise, but I've at least got proof I haven't made it all up and a something to go back and reminisce over after the inevitable happens...

Congradulations.
Cory, we can expect to see you more often again yet this year. Always good watching your flying skills. Add how the big Edge show's. Batteries, or not I know you have committed to Drayton Valley, going to be some big birds there.

Re: 43% Edge 540

Thanks Dale.

Yes, I'll be at Drayton one way or another. Probably dragging my stearman and... I'm not sure what else yet, 40 size or smaller though I think.

Those damn, one-of, impossible to find (at any price) batteries.
Let's dig. As I would love to witness the unleashing of thousands, and thousands of watts of rotational POWER!

Re: 43% Edge 540

Thanks Brodie.

Re: digging

Efforts are underway to try to resuscitate the bad cell, but I don't know how that will turn out... maybe with fireworks.

If anyone does happen to know where I could get a 7S 5800 zippy compact pack in the next week or so I'd be eager to hear about it. I was gonna get one UPS'd (cringe) but the US warehouse is out of stock.

If there's someone out there with one they'd be willing to lend for a week or so... my peak draw is only about 26C and of course I'd be willing to replace it with new in the event of crash damage or other incident.

Re: 43% Edge 540

Congrats on the maiden!!
I have been thinking of trying a 50cc or 100cc size plane as electric. You have inspired me! Maybe there will be a giant scale electric plane in my fleet next year!!
