Looking at the Lipo Gurus/non-gurus for some help

I have this practically new MP3 player that hasnt been used for a while now(about 2 years).

It uses a 3.6V Li-ion rechargable pack. But now it wont turn on. I am guessing the battery is dead. Does anyone spot any other explanation?black wire disease?

Oh yea, the player does not turn on with the adapter too. thats really wierd coz 2 yrs ago i was using this pretty frequently and everythig seemed to work well.

What can i do now? I was thinking of making a pack by myself. It uses only 1 Li-ion cell. So shudnt be that hard

this is the battery
http://www.creative.com/products/pro...oduct=86&nav=1

Its out of production now and ebay sells these for like 70CAD or so. Find it useless to spend that much for a single Li-ion cell which will probably cost 10-15$ in a hobby shop.
If i go about building this pack, i just forsee one problem. "Removing the existing pack from the casing and re-fitting the new pack"

Any leads on this guys??

Its loaded with questions, but i havent really dealt with lipos earlier, so i dont really know.

Ur help is highly appreciated

Thanks
Pulkit

I would err on the side of caution here and stick with the manufacturers cell.

Cell characteristics are all different between battery models and manufacturers. By this, I mean internal resistance, and other characteristics could vary.

There should be a circuit that monitors the Lion cell while it charges and discharges in the player. If the battery characteristics are not valid for that circuit, it may allow for overcharing or over discharging and you could end up with a fire in your hands.....literally.

If this was Nicad or Nimh, I would say go for it since safety is not as much of a concern. In the case of Lithium technology don't take chances.

tech1,

Thought bout that, but i was also planning on adding a charge lead so taht i can charge it using my triton.

Would it still be an issue? i mean batteries are available on ebay but they arent from the manufacturer. And the manufacturer himself has discontinued those batteries coz i guess they want their customers to go buy ipods instead. kinda stupid that they dont support their products. Boo Creative!!

so yea, back on the question. what may be the cause and how easy is it to replace the pack from the casing. And how wud i go about doing that

Thanks

Yeah, and take your first born child, too!

I thought I'd check out some of their NiCad and NiMH prices... I'd rather buy my batteries north of the border, and I'm always checking out new suppliers. But these guys are a little out of touch!

$12.72 for a Sanyo CP2400SCR that I can get from GH for $8.49? Or HobbyWholesale for $9.50? Or $3.50 from cheapbatterypacks.com?

And even their laptop batteries are no great bargain. Looking at replacements for my lappy, I find that theirs is only $10 cheaper than OEM, with less capacity! What exactly is the business model here?

I guess I'll have to keep looking for a cheap domestic supplier.

Sorry... got carried away in my little rant, I forgot what I was originally going to post!

If your player isn't working on adaptor power, it's possible the cell is completely pooched, but more likely it's the mp3 player that's toasted.

What make/model is it?

Hey Squidbait

Its this one
http://www.creative.com/products/pro...16&product=296

Bigger than some of the current 20gig players, but i dont need the portability that much. this will do my job very well.

i had this question on up on other forums too. and some think that it cud be the pcb on the lipo that may have blown. so i found this
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...S&Category=966
and i'll solder a single cell onto that.

Thats the plan so far. is there anything that i must know before i go ahead?
I am thinking of this as a project more than needing to get it work. coz i am certainly not getting a battery shipped to my door for 90$ where i cud put in some more money and get an ipod or something.

If it works, well and good, if it doesnt, i guess i'll be satisfied with its performance in the past and retire it.
