Palmer Plans C-130

Late winter kit cutting begins! I've already started making all my templates, starting with the vertical stab/rudder, and elevator/horizontal stab. Paper templates are glued to Bristol board, which is then tacked to 1/8th in Baltic Birch ply, for cutting out a "master" template. Templates are sanded smooth, with all notches, etc, and then used to cut out the balsa parts. Once I get all the templates made, then I'll start cutting balsa.

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Hi Dave. Question, why the intermediate step of gluing plan to Bristol board before gluing to plywood? Not being critical, just trying to learn...

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Elementary my dear Watson! lol Once I have a plywood template, I can use it for cutting out parts, without risk of doing something dopey (quite common with me), and damaging my one and only template.

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Yup, makes sense! You must have quite a collection of templates!

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

A few! I know that I'll be cutting at least two of the C-130s, both with be Spectre Gunships, and possibly a third. Also doing a 1/5th Bronco, just doing one for now, but if someone at our club suddenly wants a kit, 1/2 the work is already done.

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Most of the Horizontal stab templates are done, and some of the vertical stab/rudder. Once there's a nice pile, I'll post some pics of the process.

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Slowly puttering away on getting parts cut for the pair of C-130's. Have most of the wing ribs and vertical stab ribs rough cut and sanded, need to cut all the notches and lightening holes yet. Still progressing on cutting parts for the Bronco at the same time.

Re: Palmer Plans C-130

Plan is to get all the cutting, set aside all the stringers, sheeting, start piling up all the gear from now till the fall, then get them both on the go at the same time, in Sep/Oct. Once I've got the Bronco kit fully cut, and these, then it's the Hostetler Cessna Skymaster!
