Doesn't hurt so much today..

Actually it didn't hurt yesterday either, just a bit disheartening to see my old Ergo bite the dirt. Crossing at about 45 degrees at about 50 feet out and 10 feet high,it rolled to the right and went in, non responsive to aileron input. Arrgh, wtf did I do? was my first thought, but postmortem analysis showed the cyclic servo was dead. Nothing, not even a buzz or crunching of broken gears. Just dead.
Good things helis don't feel any pain.
Broken blades, grip links, bent tailboom, mainshaft, head spindle, A couple teeth broken off the main gear. And the upper frames have a suspicious twist- probably will require a total strip down, probably out for the season.
Good thing I have buckets of spare parts, I think I have everything I need spares.
Just need some more time. Guess I'll have to push bedtime back to 3:30 AM for a while.
Pics to follow..
Vince

Just a reason to upgrade into another heli now

Re: Doesn't hurt so much today..

Upgrade? So my new heli will become obsolete in 3 weeks?
Actually I think I will upgrade the Ergo with some bits I have been saving for just this occasion.
There are a lot of perfectly serviceable and elegant helis out there that don't get flown anymore just because they are older. JR Vigors, X-Cells, TSK, heck, even the Raptor line are pretty much obsolete and getting long in the tooth. But all are top of the line helis , that currently go for next to nothing because everybody wants the newest and coolest heli on the block.
Sure my Ergo is over 10 years old, underpowered (with an OS 32 ) and overweight, somewhat boxy in appearance, and a bit weak in several areas.
Maybe I just have too much sentimental investment in it. Or I just like old stuff.

But as I said, I have the bling...time to purple my Ergo.

Re: Doesn't hurt so much today..

Sorry to hear that Vince.

Fix 'er up and get it in the air again. I love the older stuff too! One fella flew a Vigor in Class I at the US Nats this year and boy did that heli sit nicely. He beat out a $5000 Staysee fused Sylphide with all the best electronics and hardware...

Don't feel so bad, bud. It is always disheartening when a heli goes in.

There was no way you could have predicted or prevented that. The $$ signs always flash before my eyes the second before impact..

Dont stay up too late, I sometimes get sloppy when I get too tired...

Sorry to hear that Vince. That pretty much sums why I got out of helicopters...there's no such thing as a small crash.

Re: Doesn't hurt so much today..

No worries,
Poor thing looks like a puppy with it's tail tucked between it's legs, drooping ears after being smacked in the snout with a rolled-up newspaper.
The canopy has survived it's third crash with nary a scratch, only a windshield fixing screw has pulled out on it.
There are other projects in the works... with a bit more programing and initial set-up the Bell 47 should be airworthy. Maybe by the end of the long weekend it will be test-hovered.
The Ergo will be stripped and rebuilt , and an evil twin built at the same time.

You mean when you crash a plane it somehow is easier to fix? LOL I dunno my experience with planes has not been better, even most times when you fix it, it is never the same on the plane, where as at least on a heli you replace the part and it flies the same exact. Each to their own, thats what is great about the hobby tons of options and fun out there.
