Hi

I'm whipping together a new pair of .25 size floats for my new project.

That's no big deal, except that it's the first pair I've ever scratch built after dreaming up the design and construction in my head. They're simple, flat bottomed, and made out of balsa; the entire concept will allow me to fly a small plane off the lake in winter or summer.

Anyway, should I epoxy a coating of 1/2oz. fibreglass coat onto the bottom to make it stronger and more waterproof? Come to think of it, should I fiberglass the whole contraption with 1/2oz. fiberglass silk?

i would fiberglass the complete float with 1/2 cloth.i made floats out of blue foam and covered them with light ply on the bottom and 1/6 balsa on the rest of the float.i also sprayed them with plastic coat paint.i think it was from varathane,good stuff to seal the wood.i never had an issue with leaks or the wood peelingoff the floats.

a freind built a set as you have and coated them with 1/2oz cloth using finishing epoxy.they turned out great,smooth finish and were strong.if you want to keep the floats light this is a good way to go.hope this helps.
