Nose wheel servos failing

OK This must be my year for bad luck.

I have a digital servo hooked up to my nose wheel that has caster in it. (L 39 Albartos) I find that the servo is trying hard to keep the nose centered and over heats and then slows down or stops wiorking. I was told that using a digital servo on the nose is not desirable.

I used the Futaba 18 radio with the 14 channel receiver.

What are you guys using?

Thanks

Hey Pete, I use digital servos but set up a dual rate so that when the gear is retracted, up it is actually shut off. Servo not working at all

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

I've always used an elcheapo analog Hitec 645 for nose. Strong metal gears and it's cheap!!! I have never had a steering problem caused by the servo.

I prefer jr nes4131 servos for nose gear steering.

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

Good quality core less and not digital they fight to find centre all the time and will heat up and eventually fail.

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

Hi Pete,

I just use a JR 537 standard analog with JR or Futaba gyro. That's for a Bandit and BVM T-33 sized acft. No stripped gears or servo failures...so far.

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

This may be an odd question coming from someone who hasn't had a nose wheel since I converted my trainer to a tail dragger... but would a servo saver help?

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

Peter,
when the servo gets overheated during the flight or during take off and/or landing? During the flight it is good shut off mix for the rudder/nose steering . Because for take off or landing it is short time and it should get overheat.
Just my 2 cents

Interesting product. I dont know if the guys that fly regularly on tarmac would use them, but for grass field apps I think they would for sure be beneficial.

Re: Nose wheel servos failing

I would think that a servo saver is more likely to fail than a servo, thus the name... In that case, it increases the likelihood of losing steering on takeoff or landing, which drives the question - is it worth it to lose the servo or risk damaging/losing the jet?

I flew my HotSpot (RIP...), a Yellow Stingray, and a Tamjets F-16 with a run of the mill metal gear hitec on the nose wheel, and it never gave me trouble in 10 years on any of them.

Way back when I built the hotspot in 2001, I remember them saying not to go digital on that function. The precision and speed are just not necessary.
