Hsd Me 262 wing flutter

So on my second flight, I was doing a down wind , level high speed pass then boom the most violent wing flutter I’ve ever witnessed. So bad it blew the canopy hatch off ( which I thought was one the wings!) I instantly chopped throttle and to my delight still had control. Dropped gear flaps an landed. Upon examining it I found that where the wings bolt to fuse through a plastic cap on the wings that’s basically just glued to the foam. The front attachment is closer to the wing tube and has considerably more glueing surface unfortunately the rear is not supported by any spar , and to make matters worse there are cut outs for the wire connecter and landing gear areas leaving only 3/4 of an inch of glueing surface for the rear part of the wing and this is where it has let go on both wings causing the wings to rotate basically on the spar in an up-and-down fashion. I’m writing this to any future owners of the HSD Me262 to be aware of and perhaps reinforce those areas before you fly ,or at least don’t do any really high speed passes with this thing or you may not be as lucky as me and lose the entire aircraft . I plan to insert a second spar in this area to spread the load area so that this does not happen again. iIt is unfortunate that when we pay so much for these models the engineering just isn’t there

Re: Hsd Me 262 wing flutter

Adding an extra wing tube will likely be the best and most solid fix. Too bad that it wasn't setup that way out of the box but maybe newer versions will be. Such a great-looking model, too!

You can see how little structure is left after they channeled out for wiring , and wheel bay . I plan on inserting a carbon rod where the wing hold point is out into the wing 6 inches to distribute the load in that area. Hopefully it will be enough!

Re: Hsd Me 262 wing flutter

So here’s my fix. I left the carbon rod stick out 1/8 to insert into the fuse to act as a rotation pin , it also goes through the cap on the wing side and out into the wing 6 inches so now the back half has the load spread out and not just relying on a very small glued area of foam

Re: Hsd Me 262 wing flutter

Also the area between the rear of wing( foam) and plastic cap. Was not glued allowing the rear most trailing edge to move freely . It is now glued firmly!

No telemetry but she was definitely scooting, 6500 90c for juice (x2 ), I definitely reached the airframe limit lol.

Re: Hsd Me 262 wing flutter

Good that you were able to save the aircraft and do the repairs . Another suggestion would be for those that push their aircraft to high speeds is to check out what could be the cause of flutter in the first place ie slop in the connections from the servo to the control surface , including servo gear slop . Gaps in the hinge line or poor fitting hinges of control surfaces just to name a couple.
Flutter will produce large stresses on the airframe as I have seen happen on turbine jets , resulting with a quick removal of the control surface and even a wing .
