Why dowels for pushrods?

I was wondering why dowels are often used for the pushrods in a SPAD. I have just built a BUHOR and I used 2 56 rods with Sul clevises. Should I change them to dowels? Will I have problems?

the dowel is so the push rods don;t flex, take a dowel and tape it onto the side of your push rod to make sure they don;t flex under pressure.

The dowels are also useful if you dont have long enough 2-56, you can extend the length to any that is needed.
