Mechanical gyros?

I got a mechanical gyro with my heli. and I am wondering if it should be used while learning because it's not that much of a loss if it gets banged in a crash or should I just go with a cheap piezo (I think greathobbies has them for like a 100 bucks). Thanks

I'd fly it for now. I would also save up some money while you learn to fly, then once you have all the basics mastered and are moving on to more advanced 3D you could buy a HH gyro with the money you saved up.

I agree with james. It will work as good as a cheep normal rate gyro, I learned loops, rolls and flips with mine.

I was just thinking with this mechanical gyro can I use a standard servo to keep my costs down a bit instead of buying one of those expensive digital of high torque ones. Oh yeah my gyro is an old Futaba FP-G154. Thanks

Yes, a cheep servo will work fine, and if you ever plan on putting a digital servo on the tail don't go for hi-torque, speed is more important, the tail does not require a lot of servo power.

Glad to hear that a standard servo will get the job done well I really didn't want to have to cough up the bucks for a expensive servo when my receiver needs attention. Thank allot

The mechanical will easily take you through hovering , loops, rolls, stall turns and autos. I would not worry about using it at all in your case.
