I'm up here from NZ for a short time, and before i left i asked about r/c supplies in here and RCU.

I got a reply from someone at GH and placed an order when i arrived.

My stuff arrived today, some 8 days later (im not close to anything!), expertly packaged and i am very happy.

If you dont already use GH i can highly reccomend them.

Yup, these guys are good. They have never screwed up one of my orders, and I have been dealing with them for a while. I always check my LHS first (he's got to be there as well), but I like GH as a backup.

Online is very competitive, and Canadians (not just Maritimers! :P ) are not Running Second to anyone. I just wish that they were a bit more receptive to Canadian manufacturers; I had to go to RCCanada to find out about Lloyd Shales' products (also very satisfactory).

I've been over this before regarding the lack of a viable list of Canadian manufacturers, and the wishy-washy attitude of online suppliers towards the products. I do wish there was some way for a Canadian to find out what we need in this market, and what we a capable of doing here. Shale's product was much better than comparable US products; why was it so hard to find out about it?

Same goes for anyone else out there on RCC. Take a few minutes and browse the list. If you know of someone who needs to be added please spend 2 minutes and do so.

Great Hobbies is good, but I've dealt with a few vendors that are better - both in Canada and international. In Canada, for example, Zebrahobby has a much better ordering system and excellent customer service.

The main thing Great Hobbies needs to improve is their online ordering system. Stock status should be indicated so that you know if you are going to wait a few days or much longer for an item. Order confirmation should be automatic and immediate, not an email or phone call a day or two later.

I'm not saying they are bad at all, it is just that they have fallen behind other online vendors in this regard.

Because I deal with beginner's projects (yeah, here he goes again ) I didn't hink that Shales's products would have aplace here on an r/c site. He manufacturers two kits, the Minnow and Sparrow, both freeflight models designed for beginners like schools, scouts, cadets, etc. They are excellent kits, just the thing for the hang-around kids where you fly.

The Minnow is easy to build, and the performance is far and away better than the MAAC Dart; look for up to a minute, indoors or out, once the rubber/prop/winds are sorted out.

The Sparrow is a catapult glider, and again the kit is remarkable compared to, say, the Flip by Sig. I very nearly lost mine on about the 3rd trimming flight, and it is indeed spectacular for any kid (or adult!) who is looking for a place to a start into the hobby.

To my mind, every club should have a few of these on hand, just to get the kids interested at a level they understand. I know that my interest in the hobby started when a guy ran a Parks program one summer, and I built my first successful model: I was seven years old. If r/cers want to make a difference int the hobby, and to impress the local bureaucracies re fields and club viability, they MUST have a starting point into the hobby that doesn't involve a ton of money, a special field, and endless rules; kids just want to accomplish, and models like Lloyd's serve that purpose better than any other models I have seen in 55+ years.

I have to agree with you . My local hobby shop leans towards ordering from

those big suppliers in the USA instead of the smaller ones in Canada due to

the ease of ordering and the bigger profits.

I like to support Canadian suppliers if it is of equal quality and usually it is of better quality and shipped within the country. Much quicker & cheaper than if it was shipped across borders.

On the other hand there are Canadian suppliers that list their prices ONLY in USA dollars. They could at least list the Canadian dollar equivilant.

This I see as an insult to Canadians !

They do not value Canadian business if they do not show prices in CANADIAN dollars.

Boys I have to "VENT" a little here, sorry.

First of all I have been buying from Jim Ewing (GH) since he started sell R/C from his Mother's basement, but I have to agree that his website needs a little revamping. I usally find out what I want to know from the Towers Hobbies web site and then order from GH because I find the TH site MUCH easier & faster to navigate around. Here's the big one - Jim are you listening ? Please have the STOCK STATUS llisted on your website, I will not place an order with GH on line unless I call first and check stock, I think this is an unnecessary step. Other than these two items keep up the Great Work, Great Hobbies, I still want to call it Jim's R/C.

Now for all you guys who want everyone to buy "Canadian". The first place we can start to change things around are supposedly "Canadian" sites like E-Bay.Ca I get really frustrated when I see "Canadians" list everything for sale in US $'s, the item is listed in US, the freight is listed in US, some people will only take US dollars as payment. Just for fun one day I e-mailed a guy in Canada (who said he only accepted payment in US funds) and asked him if he would accept payments in Can. $'s, he e-mailed me back and said NOPE most of my stuff is sold to the US and I do all my business in US dollars.

This all boils down to the fact they we "Canadians" are a greedy bunch who look "South" for most of our sales and are so afraid to offend the US that we cater to the US market. When was the last time you were on a US R/C web site and saw things listed in Cnd. $'s first or only Cdn. $'s.

Now I know some Americans are going to read this post and think I am badmouthing the USA, nothing could be farther from the truth, heck my oldest Son just graduated from the Univ. of Mich. with his MBA and is now working, get this one, for E-Bay in Calif. I just would like us to be proud of who we are, what we stand for and for the MOST part can stand on our own 2 feet.
