The engine only has a total of about 6 ounces of fuel through it. I may be picking up a GP 176 to test off of Fergus Lin to test. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Just what the heck is a GP 176 and a Fergus Lin 176/88?

Enlighten me!

Re: Engine Testing Thread

Trev,

I am going to need to book some time on that stand for the 110CS to test props and get the header length proper on the RE2s.

Of course you know with me it's going to be NOTHING but 3 blades ALL the way!

Ya Babby.......... 3 Blades

Re: Engine Testing Thread

Fergus Lin is that hot shot pilot out of Taiwan that went to the Nall last year. Pilot has many videos of him test flying their planes. His father was a co owner of TMM (formally 3MM). The engine looks and sounds good. He is making very large claims of quality and that many of his parts are made by the same factories that produce parts for DA. He is claiming the quality of his engines are as good as or better than a DA or 3W. Time will tell. I will report what ever I find either way. The engine has been in development for over a year and I talked to another engine guy in the business and he saw an earlier version and said he was on the right path and it looked very good even in early testing. Fergus swears this is not one of those cheap Chinese engines. I find they even seem to take offence when associated with the Chinese. Either way I will soon have one, possibly the first in North America and I will report the good, bad or the ugly.

Re: Engine Testing Thread

I received my GP 176 in the mail today, my first impressions are below. I haven't taken any measurements or anything as I just go home after being away at work for 15 hours. I'll take some quick measurements and mount it on my test stand tomorrow.
Fit and finish is good
Prop bolts and muffler bolts are grade 12.9 not the usual 8.8
Carb is Walbro as stated
Rcexl ign with genuine NGK CM-6 plugs
Mufflers are lightweight yet look to be very well built, I don't see them falling apart any time soon. Time will tell though. They remind me of Slimline Mufflers.
Mufflers are set up for smoke and come with screws installed in the holes which by the way have jets on the inside of the muffler to spray the smoke fluid. Brass nipples are included for using smoke.
Cylinder castings are good with no casting flaws, pits or holes. I will check roundness of bore tomorrow
All cap head screws used for assembling the engine are also grade 12.9 with the exception of the countersunk screws retaining the mounting plate which are 10.9
The engine mount plate is billet
The hub looks to be machined from billet and then chrome plated.
Crankcase casting looks very good
Engine is pre-run before shipping as advertised. Rings are well on their way to being broke in. Not the diamond hard rings found on other Asian engines that take forever to seat.
Overall I am very impressed with what I see so far. As Fergus stated this engine is assembled from quality components, this is also reflected in the price. It is not designed to compete with the low cost imports but to take on the bigger names. Once he secures a North American distributor and dealers others may be more willing to take one on and give it a try. Many are leery of importing such things. I rarely have had any problems with importing items.

As for performance I will see what it does on the bench tomorrow. I will slap on a Mejzlik 30x13EvoL that I ran on my DA 170, 3W 170 and a DLE 222. My DA turns it 6060 static, the 3W at 6250 static and the DLE222 at 6300. The DLE was brand new and has less than a tank of fuel through it. The DA has a couple gallons through and the 3W about 1 gallon. All were on mufflers except the 3W which was on KS 95 canisters. Fergus was getting around 6100 I believe on his with mufflers.

If the performance stays consistent with the other engines in it's class and it remains reliable and not spitting out bearings etc every time you turn around I see it finding a place in the market for itself. But as with everything time on the engine and multiple users posting consistent findings will be needed for trust to be built in both the engine and the brand.

Anyways all for now I will post my findings tomorrow.

Re: Engine Testing Thread

I knew I would not sleep until I checked a few things. So I pulled a jug.
The bolt fit to threads is very good. The casting is to my feeling a very good alloy. The cylinders were torque on extremely tight with no damage to the threads at all. I had to really put some effort into snapping them loose.
The cylinder is very round. It is within .0005" to .001" within round where ever I check. The piston is the same. The taper was ... crap I forget, about .014". Piston design is a very slight dome. I will check the squish tomorrow. Fergus uses the nice retainers for the wrist pin. They are not aligned vertically like I prefer so I rotated them so the arms were vertical. I measure the squish at 0.025".
Here are a couple of pictures of the inside. Oil lubrication holes are drilled in the connecting rods.

Re: Engine Testing Thread

Doug..it looks to be a really well built engine.

Are the exhaust flanges the same size as something currently available?

Can't wait for your testing..

Re: Engine Testing Thread

Ralph C pointed out the taper did not sound correct on another forum. That is why I said I forgot when I posted it. I bet it was .0014. I never wrote it down and then by the time I reassembled it and posted I could not remember how many decimal points. The other thing is he may have thought I was talking taper of the cylinder bore and I was talking about the piston. Either way it is info out the window now as I am not pulling it apart again just to check.

Anyways here are a few more things.

Weight

Engine, prop bolts, prop washer and plugs... 3700g or 8 lb 2.6 oz

Ignition.......................................... ........... 155g or 5.4 oz

Everything above with mufflers and muffler bolts 4255g or 9 lb 6 oz

Mounting dimension 90 mm x 97 mm

Exhaust bolt spacing 42 mm

Exhaust port 18 mm x 30.6 mm
