Anyone have any thoughts on the new p51 mustang pts from Hangar 9??
It looks to be a very capable plane to learn on.

Probably a very decent flying aircraft, definitely not a trainer though.

My advice, take it or leave it, save yourself a lot of frustration and expense, hook up with an Instructor at a local club and go with their recommendations. Don't try it alone, there is more to learn than you might realize.

After reading the ad, it looks like it could be used as a primary trainer, but you should follow Jim's advice and contact a local instructor, and get his advice.

Jim, have you seen this new P51 (Progressive Training System) PTS Mustang?
It has many features added to make it suitable as a trainer.

Thanks Ron,

I've seen similar approaches taken with other offerings.

It may be quite tame but, it's still a low wing taildragger, which is not a trainer in my books. No matter how well set up/gimmicked up, I doubt it could ever be as docile as a Kadet for example.

It seems with all the trainer goodies attached they have managed to slow it down nicely.

I wonder how it handles after the training is done?
I like the idea of being able to add a flap servo later on.

Interesting, but it will hurt a lot more when the "crashing" begins when starting to land. At least when the nose breaks off an Avistar, it doesn't matter how the repair will look.

One thing the silver is not the ideal color package to aid the beginner in the orientation of the airplane in flight. As to low wing tail draggers I know of one or 2 who learned to fly with a Great Planes Spacewalker so anything is possible. As to the flying characteristics I will wait until I have flown one to make a fair comparison with a standard trainer.
