breaking in an engine

The proper method depends on the type of engine.

You would run in a ringed piston engine differently from an ABC engine.

Running slowly is not correct. You run a ringed piston engine at full throttle with a rich setting. If that makes it run a bit slowly, fine.

You could always consult someone such as Teledyne Continental who put out a very informative publication, which I just happen to have a copy of, which explains precisely why it is not a good idea to run slowly or at less than full throttle unless you want a shorter engine life and less than peak performance over the engine's life.

The worst thing you can do is run too lean. You can fry it in one over lean run.

If it's an ABC engine, you run it at full throttle just a bit richer than peak lean. The reason is that the piston and cylinder achieve their proper fit at operating temperature. At lower temperatures, which you get if too rich or less than full throttle, the fit is too tight and the engine is attempting to ram the piston into the top of the cylinder as it approaches top dead center. That's not good, especially for the piston and cylinder and the connecting rod. So says Clarence Lee, well known engine designer and considered by many to be an authority on RC engines.

Mr. Lee also suggests that your break in will not be complete until you get the engine operating under load, which in our case means flying. And you vary the load and throttle setting throughout those first few flights.

Mr. Lee has a great book which was put out by RC Modeler Magazine on the operation and care of RC engines. That would help you out quite a bit.

Follow the instruction manual to a "T". Every manufacturer has different techniques so just stick with what they say and you'll be fine.

engine

Ok what engine do you have. It will help to figure out what the right thing to do with breakin. It should be more like 8-10 ounces on the rich setting then the next few start leaning it up to get to the right settings.

manual

check out page 19 of your manual. It will tell you what you need to know to properly break in the engine.
