Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
I had the fly fly Bae Hawk but I never had the chance to fly it. I had nose retract and elevator failures while testing. When I had it all sorted out I did get airbourne for a few seconds but I didn't have enough speed as I ran out of runway. Luckily not much damage but I decided my field was too bumpy and the Goetex was not long enough for my setup and sold it.
Good luck with maiden. Let us know how it goes. It is a beautiful EDF. |

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
It would appear that; dried lumpy grass will punish high speed small wheeled composite edf jets. Which is not to say that light weight foamy jets are fairing any better lately (At HVRCF). That being said - Here are the nose gear mods (More bending & more epoxy). Waiting for a head wind and cooler temps.

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
Sounds like your field is ideal for bungee launches.
I would probably do the maiden at a club with a runway, even if you do get airborne at your field I guarantee you will have nonstop repairs to the gear each time you fly it. Its really designed for smooth surfaces.

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
Hi Mike, here is my two cents, looking at your struts, I see you made them as sturdy as you can make them with the materials you had, but on a rough surface, that will actually work against you, the least you need is a coil made in the strut to allow some flex.
So, here is what I would suggest you do, place an order to Hobby King for replacement oleo struts, they are inexpensive and actually, very well made. For the nose gear, if they fit, I would use these, for under $10.00, really good investment. Last edited by Dutkoski; 07-17-2016 at 06:42 PM. |

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
Yeah, I got an Ipad so only one picture per post.
For the main gear, I would suggest these, however, they have a slightly small set as well that have wheels included. Last edited by Dutkoski; 07-17-2016 at 06:42 PM. |

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
Thnx 4th input. We've seen these LG/sets at HVRCF and on foamies they're good (3 landings - OH/Oh - F@^9nsht). That being said - Pretty much every thing I do is an approximation of tried and true and a lot of failed ideas - It's all good.
Maiden next week when the OAT drops. //m. |

Re: Composite BAE-Hawk Modified Build
Maiden Flight Today! No gyros in this one //10 degrees of flap plus a 130' take-off roll off the grass. . She launched nicely into a 12km breeze (cg/110mm - nose down trim). Three clicks of (n/u) trim and flew like (An Advanced) composite RC jet. Three nice touch&goes then a full flap (40 degrees) landing - which was firm. . Canopy (modified latch) ejected into the vertical stabilizer and shattered it. RE: Composite Build Thread. .
I'm happy the gear held up - Not so much about the canopy. I'm a builder and have the materials in stock to refit and go flying again. Happy Flying//g. |

Nice going! Already doing touch n goes on the maiden? that's brave, well sounds like you have a good reliable flying bird there.

"I've contacted a fellow member at HumberValley RCF who has a lot of jet experience(TOC). He has accepted my invitation to maiden the AC next spring." Either way good going. Hopefully the vertical stab will not be too much work to repair. |
