Engine testing

I was wondering how a person could tach an engine inside the shop with no out side light? It is dark when I am finished work.

I know that fluorescent lights mess tachs up and give a 3600 reading.

There must be a way of making the tach work with normal light bulbs?
Has anyone had this problem

The tach reads the lights turning on and off at the 60 hz (60 times per second) frequency.

There is NO way to use any lighting on the AC power with the tach.

However, if you have a good strong flashlight, you can get a buddy to hold it facing the tach onone side of the prop, while you tach it from the other side. The light source has to be DC (battery powered) and strong enough to outshine the normal lights indoors. In my shop, if I have to tach something I just kill the main lights and use the flashlight, but you kind of need a few people to help you hit the switches, hold the flashlight, etc.

Simpler doing it on a weekend during the day. outdoors

engine testing

Thanks, I was getting readings with my tach all over the place.

I have Million candle watt flash light that should work.
If not, I guess I will have to let frank work on tuning the engine during the daytime.

Stompin' Tom

I met Stompin' Tom in 1967 at a "local watering hole" here in the "Sault". We were "tearing down" and he was "setting up" for the next weeks "gig". He wasn't famous then, just a "one man band" on the "Northern circuit" (Sault, Timmins, Kirkland Lake area, North Bay, Sudbury)..

We had "lots of equipment", he had a Gibson flat top, a microphone, and a "slab of well-worn plywood"..He was driving an old (circa early 60s) pickup with a small "home-made" camper on the back...I guess you can say he "paid his dues".

I guess I'm still "paying mine" but I wonder if he "flies model aircraft" :

I knew it was Tom. I thought it was planecrazy "Chris" that was asking, but it was the "other" planecrazy.

Sorry for the confusion!

Stompin' Tom

Hey I saw Tom in concert this year in Barrie at the Barrie Molson Centre. One of his best shows that I have seen him do. A great set of songs.

Also if you have heard "The Bug Song" in the background sounding like a formation of bugs whizzing by is really Tom juniors Control line aircraft going around and around.

Check him out at www.stompintom.com
