Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
This third post is about , how easy it was to remove the engine from the fire wall . There are however , 4 items , that must be detached before removing the engine from the firewall , and they are : 1 ) gas Line 2 ) Oil smoke Line 3 ) throttle linkage 4 ) 2 X electrical lines All are easily accessible , and four bolts to remove and all comes off . First picture is one of the fuselage front view . you can see the brass tubing for the smoke oil . The second is of the engine off the fuselage . and the third is a picture of the rear of the engine unite and , last is , unite sitting on the work bench , where it can be maintenance d ( in the future ) Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
Well I got myself into a bit of a mess , I misaligned the mounting holes in the spinner back plate , but not so bad that it can not be used . Some days its better to stay out of the work room . THIS IS ONE OF THEM As you can see from the pictures , its not that bad , but , it still has to be balanced Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
Good Afternoon and Season Greetings . Cowl Installation I started by makeing templates for the placement of the bolts where it will hold the cowl in place . Than I made a 1/8 plywood shim , that will go inbetween the cowl and the spinner back plate . I installed the engine and made an approximate cut-out , with a template already made and layed out where the head would stick out of the cowl . This first cut was done with the spinner and prop inplace The side screws are than installed , 4 of the in all . These four screws will hold the cowl in place along with the spacer in front of the cowl . This first cut-out is only rough and will be cleaned to size later . I pre-drilled the cowl holding blocks Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
And we keep going ....................... I made a tmplate for the muffler and the exhaust stacks , inbetween the stacks are the venting tubes , this will also be the excite for the HOT air . Also along with that , I included the cut-out for the spark-plug wire . That is one ugly wire to have hanging out there , there are not many options , that wire has to be there . Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
With all the major cut-outs made , and fitting going very well , it was time to install the cowl holding blocks , two on the top and two on the bottom . First everything must be removed from the firewall . Than the cowl must be installed with the spacer plate and the 4 screws that where drilled out before . . The blocks were shaped to the specific place and identified . Glue was applied to the ends of the blocks and to the surface of firewall where the blocks go . Thirty minute epoxy was used to install the blacks . I waited at least 25 minutes before installing them so that the glue would be really , really , tacky , this way they will hold in place . More Later Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
Some more picture for the last post . Here you can see that the blocks are well in there place , and will not crush the cowl . The last picture is the end result . Each block is in its place and interferes with nothing else . Lots of time just to add four blocks . But , there well place and thats all that counts Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
And a result of todays efforts . manys of you will say : its the same engine as the last MT-57 that you installed ................... No it is not ........... the installation is a lot cleanner than the BBD-2 . the biggest change is that you do not have to loosen the muffler to get the cowl off . At one of the pictures in the other posts , there is a shot of the cowl emply , I must admit to myself that it does kook like a BUTCHER job , but did the best I coud . To finalize the front end there is still a lot to do : 1 ) wire power for the ignition 2 ) above the gas tank install battery support , for ignition 4.8 volts 3 ) Install switchs X 2 , Gas fuel Dot , smoke oil fuel Dot , Air gauge , air fill valve , devided by both sides 4 ) Choke push/pull in top of cowl 5 ) drill / tap and install main cowl bolts X 8 6 ) cut-out and paint exhaust manifolds 7 ) install manifolds ( I install them so that they are removeable ) And I am sure there is something that I have forgotten Have a good Evening And A Happy Holiday season Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly
Hi
I have been going over the last posts that I have done and I keep looking back at one particular picture . So................... I looked ................ and what I saw was this : NO AIR GOING TO THE BASE OF THE HEAD , the air is being deflected , to have an air flow for that area is really important . So ............. What I am going to do is cut alittle bit of the cowl again , just enoegh so that I can get air to the critical spot , below the head .
