Exclamation How To: Remove your glued RC Tires from Rims

There are a few ways of removing your RC tires from rims. I opted for the boiling water method in an attempt to salvage 8 new but glued-to-rim tires.

The rims were awful and broken from the used TT01s I picked up. The tires will work perfect however on the extra rims I have for the cars.

Tools:
stove
pot / lid
tongs
glove / oven mitt

Suggestions for safety or other...:
Eye wear / glasses
Buy new tires instead (but not nearly as fun)
Wait till significant other is asleep.

Quick glance of the items I had prepared. Take your time. Water is boiling!

Place the tires into the boiling water. Let them cook for 5-10 minutes. I periodically took them out and checked the bead.

Using the tongs and the oven mitt I checked the bead. If for a moment it seemed the tire could rip, I put it back in the water.

These rims and tires seemed semi glued. Certainly not laced in glue. They came apart pretty easy.

A job well done. Banana time?

A clean execution. Rim to the garbage and barely used set of tires to a new set of rims.

I will add that I tried to remove another set that were absolutely glued beyond glued. I let them sit for 10 minutes and they didn't want to pull apart. Not worth the effort to be honest considering the condition of the rims.

I tried this with some Tamiya wheels a few years ago and they shrank / warped.

There certainly was some warpage showing when I initially took them off but they looked to normalize after cooling. I think for bashing these tires will be fine for most guys. If you are racing competitively just get a new set I figure.

It was a shame to toss 8 good tires on 8 awful rims.

The other sets I had would not release at all. Wasn't worth it.

That being said a quick Google search says Rubber melts @ 98-175 degrees Celsius. I guess you could monitor the temp, keep it below that.

As for when crazy glue breaks down, not sure. But if you got time you could try using acetone to release the rims / tires too.

You can also use lighter fluid to remove CA glue. Its a solvent and works well. Thanks for the tip. I have some aluminum racing rims that I want to remove the tires from and I didn't want to damage them, so this might work well with them.

Re: How To: Remove your glued RC Tires from Rims

Put the water to a boil first, one tire at a time so the bubbles keep the tire moving and away from any sides. This way it won't warp from sitting on a side or the bottom, works every time perfect for me not one damaged rim.

Edit.. I normally cut the tire open in the middle and remove the foam first and this leaves a open spot to tear the rubber right off after its been cooked for a bit lol.

Getting that rubber off has been a problem with me lately. Sometimes causes a lot of problems. Very sticky situation. Get that rubber stuff on your hands and you smell it for days.

Sometimes it comes off easy. Thanks for the tips Ricky Ricardo

Great write up but what I found works best is Acetone. I place my wheels in a Zip Lock freezer bag. Pour some acetone all over them and seal the bag, 24hours later PRESTO they peel right off!
