Canopy Scratches.

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hi everyone,
I just joined this great web site and I am finding it to be very informative. Whoever is responsible, keep up the good work.
Question: I have a series of scratches in a canopy that I have to use on a plane I'm building. Does anyone have an products they know of that will make my problem go away. I've tried silicone polish, with no results.
Any input would be helpfull. Thanks Chris.

Chris:

I know this may sound silly, but try "Future" floor polish. Test it on some scuffed up scrap canopy material first to be totally sure. It really works well. Clean all traces of the silicone off with lots of soap and water first though.

I haven't tried either of these but have read that jewelers rouge or toothpaste (non gel kind) can be used to rub the scratches out.

I see on TV now they are advertising a liquid to wipe on glasses to remove scratches. I think this would effect the vision, but it might work in you application. I can't remember the name of it but something like Liquid Glass. If I see it again, I'll let you know.

Sratch Removal

Hello Chris:

As mentioned in a previous post, toothpaste does a credible job of removing very minor scratches in clear plastic canopies. I would use a more abrasive brand like Arm & Hammer (paste). For deeper scratches, within reason, you might initially try 1200 grit wet or dry emery cloth (wet) and then follow-up with the tooth paste. You might also consider rust remover polishing compound in liquid form - something like Turtle Wax chrome polish.

Good luck,

Peter

I am not one to say anything that I havent myself tried.... and this is one thing I will say works better than I ever could have expected!

There is a polish sold at Canadian Tire, here anyway, in a tube the size of a large toothpaste tube. Its called "PEEK" metal polish. Its safe to use on any metal, and I bought it originally for polishing aluminum spinners, landing gears, etc. On the tube it says allso safe for plastics.

Well, I tried it on my large Extra 300 canopy and it works like magic! Its a fine enough compound to not scratch the plastic, but it also cuts pretty quick to buff out the fine scratches and even makes the monokote shiny again. I ended up doing the whole plane allmost!

Try it, you will like it...

Thats "PEEK" or "PEAK" polish, I have the tube at work, cant remember how its spelt, but its in a light blue/silver tube with a white cap.

Canopy scratches

A jeweler friend of my fathers many years ago told me that he used Brasso metal polish to remove scratches on watch dials. Also excellent for taking off that fine yellow buildup on plastic convertible roof rear windows. Used it on my Austin Healy Sprite rear window and always brought it back to near new condition. I have used it for years with great sucess. It is a super fine abrasive that is suspended in a liquid. Works absolutely great on plastics, metals etc.
