I just ordered a couple of Xoar props and I am wondering how well they are balanced? Can I just drill them and skip the balancing? Or is it worth the time to balance them?

Thanks
NB

Re: Xoar Props

Hello NB:

I don't have any experience with XOAR props, however, regardless of how good or careful a manufacturer is, I would never skip the balancing procedure, even if only for my peace of mind.

Re: Xoar Props

second that... for the few minutes it takes to check (and few more to balance) its a better way than trusting it to be done.

Even higher end props seldom are balanced perfectly. And most "sport" props (even molded ones) are usually from not too bad to way off - at least 50% of the time.

Re: Xoar Props

I've used 4 or 5 of the 18x6 props, and found them to be very well balanced.
I always check mine since I have to enlarge the mounting hole. Mine were so good that a bit of clear urethane wood finish on one blade was all that was needed to balance them.

I use the small aerosol cans of clear automotive laquer from Canadian Tire. Light misting application on the back of the blade works best for me.

Like others have said..... take the few minutes it takes to do this. Saves engine wear and airframe damage due to vibration.

Re: Xoar Props

I've never yet found any prop including those which claim to be already balanced to actually be balanced as shipped.

Overall, Zingers have been the worst in my experience. Some were so bad that they went into the trash. Would have needed about a 1/2" choped off one blade.

Re: Xoar Props

I have found Zingers to be the worst as well. One was off so much I finally got fed up with it and through it out. I have found Xoar to be very good to the point many of them I haven't had to touch at all. The couple I did add some clear spray to balance, it was a very small amount.

Re: Xoar Props

No matter what kind of balancer you use always check it several times to confirm the heavy blade. I even turn the prop and balance shaft around in the support and see if it comes up the same. There is a simple method that uses a round rod and a flat surface that works great, I have balanced props from six inches to eight feet with this method and it does not suffer from pivot point drag.
