Since you are interested in jets you might enjoy the work this fellow does.
He is a vault of information pertaining to jets and shows you exactly what to and what not to do.
Everything from deciding and scaling out the project to making the molds and installing equipment.
You won't find anything like this on a DVD and the best part is it is free.
He is one of the few who wants to share his knowledge.
Check him out.

Re: Scratch built jets

Here is a screen shot of the drawing I did for the Jet. From this I create my flat profiles of all the parts I need to cut. I tabbed all the parts to they interlocked and self aligned. I used a cnc router to cut all the parts from 1/8 ply.

Re: Scratch built jets

The outside is glassed using 1.7oz cloth and west systems epoxy. I then sprayed it with a epoxy hi-build. I use a heavier cloth so i have something to sand into, when the sanding is done its probably close to 1oz.

Re: Scratch built jets

I have a question for everyone. Who seals up their fuel and engine compartment with epoxy to protect against fuel? How many people wish they had?

Re: Scratch built jets

It's a good idea to seal up bare wood in fuel areas....you can use a variety of products to do this - diluted white glue, sanding sealer, paint, thinned epoxy, etc. Some folks put a small drain hole in the fuse under the tank. This is entirely optional, but if you have a fuel leak, it won't be just a couple of drops.......it will be a lot! The risk of a fuel leak can be reduced by tie-wrapping all barbed fittings, making sure all festo fitings are plugged in securely (with no sharp bends in the line on either side of the festo fitting), and presssure testing the whole fuel system.........

Re: Scratch built jets

Here is a 1/12 Ct114 I am working on. It will be for a 70mm edf on 4s. I have a MDF plug almost done being shaped. Its my first hollow molded project which I am doing to get some experience to someday mold a bigger turbine jet.

Re: Scratch built jets

This is my stand-of-scale Heinkel He-162 Salamander. It has a wingspan of 43" and powered by a 3" Hayoe fan. It's all built-up balsa with retracts and fully functional tail. All the control linkages are internal in the tail. It's been ready to fly for a little while. I found the courage to bring it to the flying field once last year to maiden it but had a landing gear problem and it's been waiting for it's maiden since...
