I have finally found the right prop for my os 46 fx. Apc 12-4 This flys my spad3dt. The problem is my local hobby shop doesn't carry that exact prop. A 11-5 seems to work ok.
Ok my problem. I was given a torpedo 12-4 prop. white in colour and when revved up it seems to howl. Is this normal? The prop seems to be quite flexable.

Bryan,
I advise NOT to use those old nylon props! Unlike the newere APC or Master Airscrew props, there is NO fibre reinforcement in them, thats why they are so flexible. They also become very britle with age, and are not a good idea to use on a modern, higher power engine.

Its not worth losing an eye over... ditch the old nylon prop IMO.

Man get rid of that prop even when they were used you were supposed to boil them before using to help stop them from coming apart. THROW IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a website in the US run by Grish Products that sell Tornado props. If they are the same ones, does the advice above apply to all Tornado props? I understand they are very efficient performers that can give great thrust.

I agree with the APC giving better performance than MS in the same size, at least with the 40 and 60 size planes I tried both with. The other one that has been good for me is Graupner. They are a few dollars more but are quiet and seem to pull very
well.

Brian,
I have a spare APC 12x4 and don't see needing it in the near future. I'll put in my flight box and you can have it. I'll be down for the otterville funfly.

I wouldnt use ANY brand of pure nylon prop, on a modern engine. Yes, a lot of them were used in the past. But also a lot broke! They are actually very inefficient as they flex and twist out just watch one run.

They are great for the smaller engines, like the 1/2 to 09 stuff but no way would I use one today with anything else. Thats just my opinion... remember they are pure nylon without any fibres to reinforce them. They can get very brittle and break. They did require special care (like boiling to reintroduce water into the nylon to make it less brittle).

Brian,
I went out to the shop to put the prop in my box when I realized it was an APC 11-4. Let me know and I'll bring it if you want to give it a try. Sorry about that.
