Is 25 minutes too short to charge a new LiPo?
Hi: I have just bought a new Onyx 235 charger to charge my also new Venom
2S 7.4 volt 4000 mAh 20C LiPo and after my dealer programmed all the info for the battery into the charger, I took it home,60 miles away.Once home,I started it charging and it ran for maybe 25 minutes and stopped charging and the read-out said that the battery was charged, but during the charging cycle,I was watching the different values go up and I noticed the mAh value keep going up and when the charger quit charging, the mAh value was around 600! Is it possible to have a fully charged battery, voltage wise, but lacking in mAh? Thanks,Huck Last edited by Huck; 07-03-2011 at 08:10 PM. |

New batteries don't come fully charged, reading in most probably right, that's all it needed to top up. Run the pack and when you charge it you will see it will take more mah.

Re: Is 25 minutes too short to charge a new LiPo?
Thanks for the reply. I thought that the battery came dead,or close to dead when new,I realize it would not be fully charged. So if I tried to use this battery as it is now,I will probably have no run time,if in fact it has 600mAh,but volts full? Thanks,Huck

What was the voltage when fully charged? If you are concerned run a discharge cycle then recharge and monitor the mah. Just dont go below 6v during discharge. If you are charging at 1c (4 amps for your batt.) it should take an hour from fully discharged.

Re: Is 25 minutes too short to charge a new LiPo?
Hi: I measured at the main leads and I got 8.3 volts. Sorry, new guy here, just learnin' ,so how do I run a discharge cycle,do I run it out until the 'low voltage'warning comes on the controller and then charge again? Thanks

lipo's come between full and 50% charged, so it was pretty much full, and you topped it off. run it, charge it, repeat.

Re: Is 25 minutes too short to charge a new LiPo?
Sounds charged to me at 8.3v. They are usually stored and shipped at 50% charge. I am not familiar with your charger so I cant say exactly. The biggest thing with lipos is to never discharge below 3v per cell (6v for your batt). Also the charger will charge at a high amps until almost charged then back off to top off the battery. In other words most of the charge is done fast and then it takes a while to fully top off. I will have a look for your charger manual and see what I can find. Does your speed control have a built in lipo cut off?

Re: Is 25 minutes too short to charge a new LiPo?
I believe your batt showed up almost charged. Looks like your charger does not discharge as far as I can see, Best bet go run the car for10min and recharge. Check mah and adjust run time to suit. If 1000mah then increase run time to 25min and retest. Keep in mind how hard you are running the car also. For testing try to keep the same driving style and throttle control. By taking your time and keeping an eye on the numbers you should have a battery that lasts a long time.
