I also have had issues with the longer extensions vibrating and wearing needle valve assemblies. What I do now is drill and tap the end of the needle valve and screw in a small (try for 4-40) cap screw. I then use a4-40 ball driver through a small hole in the cowl to adjust the needle. Nothing vibrates and nothing sticks out of he cowl...

I'm working on a Sea fury where the cowl completely surrounds the engine. I was contemplating grinding a slot into the end of the needle valve with a Dremel. Then all I had to do was insert a small slot screwdriver through a hole in the cowl and adjust it that way.
Is this practical?

I've done this.
The only issue is getting the screwdriver to stay in the slot as the engine vibrates. It can be done but, it can be finicky, especially if your view of the end is obscured.

Don't get distracted trying to slot the screwdriver and lean into the prop!

Put a piece of fuel tubing over the needle, let it extend about 1/4 inch outside the needle. It makes it easier to get your screwdriver lined up and helps hold it in the slot while you adjust so you can concentrate on the engine.

Saito enginges come with a short piece of wire and a knob to put on the end for adjusting. Look in your box, it could be floating around in there.

Not this one buddy. Only "extra" bag in the box has the 3 allen wrenches and feeler for setting the gap.
