Building the Tony Nijhuis 72 inch Lancaster.
This is my build of a Tony Nijhuis 72 inch span Lancaster (1:17 scale). For those who haven’t researched it note that it isn’t a true scale model but one that I guess fits into the “sport scale” class. The really big departure from scale is the nacelles which house the landing gear and which do not have closing doors nor are they very similar in shape to the real thing. The outer nacelles use a similar shape to keep things looking symmetrical. Due to costs I just ordered the plans, vacuum molded parts & electric retracts which could be shipped by mail, but if any of the materials were added to the order shipping by courier was necessary & expensive considering the exchange rate. That said not ordering the laser cut parts became a bit of a problem because the plywood recommended (2 mm lite ply) isn’t available here so the next choice can add weight or reduce it depending on what you decide fits your needs. I went with 1/8 “ lite ply & sanded components a bit thinner but didn’t get down to 2 mm but I guess you could use 1/16" regular aircraft grade ply or go the balsa route for many of the components. There are however several important parts which will need the additional strength of the 1/8" lite ply. The other important thing you’ll need to decide is how you’ll power it. The recommended motors were a bit expensive & I couldn’t find a substitute I liked that was roughly the same physical size so I went with larger motors & made changes to the mounts & related areas to fit them into the supplied cowlings.
My plan was to cut the majority of ply on a scroll saw by scanning the sections of the plans & printing off sheets that got cut & glued to the ply making as many fit the full sheet as possible while keeping the grain in mind. One sheet (12" X 48") wasn’t big enough so you’ll need 2. I printed off the ribs & cut & glued them to the sheets of balsa in the same way & hand cut the balsa parts with an Exacto knife. Everything was then sanded to final shape either by hand or with simple shop tools. When the building started I used wood glue or Epoxy, I didn’t use any CA. My building methods are pretty standard old school methods but I did run into 1 big problem on the fuselage. I’ll include photos of what didn’t work & why and what did once I found a better way. Try as I did my build has ended up on the heavy side but I think it’s still OK considering I have a lot more power available than what the build article suggests. Besides the reasons mentioned I went with a resin & ½ oz glass cloth finish rather than the suggested plastic shrink style of covering. The Tony Nijhuis web site provides links to both a magazine article & some build photos but the photos must relate to an earlier version. http://www.tonynijhuisdesigns.co.uk/Lancaster72.htm The decal set I used was supplied by CanMilAir and I’m very happy with the product & pricing. They have quite a good selection & are here in Canada, plus can supply their decal sets in custom sizes if you build to a different scale than what they have listed. http://www.canmilair.com/products.php?cat=57 I still need to finish the cockpit & find crew members, paint the spinners & tips of the props but that's about it. Hopefully it flies & I'll be getting help from several friends to go over it & help get it airborne this summer. The full album of photos with notes is on line here. https://flic.kr/s/aHskJuy1Vs

Re: Building the Tony Nijhuis 72 inch Lancaster.
Thanks. I chose these motors
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...r-motor-1.html & used 4 X 40 Amp ESC's and will be using 2 batteries in the 3S-3200 to 3S3700 range rated for 70C. Things are wired so that the inboard motors are on 1 battery & the outboards are on the other. 2 motors run tractor props & 2 run pushers. Max draw when I mounted up a pair of motors for a static test was 72 Amps for a few seconds when I hit full throttle but that dropped down to the mid 60 Amp range & held there until I reduced the throttle setting. The battery I used was freshly charged but only rated for 30-35 C & I didn't push it for long.

Re: Building the Tony Nijhuis 72 inch Lancaster.
I'll do my best to answer any questions. I ordered the plans, vacuum formed plastic parts (canopy & turrets plus the set of spinners for the props) and the landing gear set. Those were reasonable in price to have mailed to Canada & although I wasn't in any hurry they arrived in about 2 weeks. To order even the basic pre cut stuff pretty much doubled the price of the order thanks to shipping costs.
