Alley Oop wants to fly !
I dont know if this the appropriate place to post, some may remember the
comic strip Alley Oop, he was always riding a Pterosaur. The movie Avatar didnt do much for me, I thought Alley Oop would have handled things in short order ! The model is depron, using a Piloto motor, and I'm going to fly it with throttle alone- the motor on the left side will take care of the torque. My question is--the test glides showed the pitch stability of a manhole lid, hence the clear plastic tail surfaces, werent these swept flying wings not supposed to need a stab? I tried lots of washout. |

Re: Alley Oop wants to fly !
Hmm... Wondering if it's wise to drop the pitch control. What airfoil are you using & what is it's pitching moment? Also where is the C of G in % of cord. Some airfoils are very pitch sensitive on their own without a horizontal stabilizer (can be at the front as well, something in the beak). My limited experience has been that reflex airfoils work better on flying wings.
How big is this bird? Neat project! I love seeing odd ball stuff like this. It proves that we are not all brain dead followers of the popular trends. Break a leg buddy!! Oh! And without dihedral, I'm wondering about lateral stability too! Last edited by OLD PRAIRIE RED NECK; 02-26-2011 at 11:38 PM. |

Re: Alley Oop wants to fly !
Hi, the span is 16" , and a flat airfoil with a bit of under camber.
Its hard to see in the photo, but there is a clear plastic stab. and rudder. The enclosed seagull is a great flyer and not in the least tricky, its about double the size and doesnt have the pointy wingtips, and just a little washout. I might have to take out some of the gull dihedral seagull last winter http://www.youtube.com/user/west6008?feature=mhum |

Re: Alley Oop wants to fly !
So! Mostly flat airfoil so it will likely come down to getting the right balance between 3 things.
1 center of gravity location 2 amount of positive incidence on the wing 3 amount of negative incidence on the horizontal stab Items 2&3 are needed to generate lift from a flat bottom wing so it will be a matter of changing them one at a time until the desired glide path is achieved. These tests will be with power off of course as power throws in another complication that is best sorted out after the glide is satisfactory! Go'na take some tinkerin'! Also, looks from the picture that the sea gull has a fair bit of dihedral. Enjoy! P.S. Sweep back on the wings has much the same effect as dihedral. |
