Got the new 2 piece tailcone from Wren today. It is pictured to the right of the stock tailcone. Together with internal changes that Wren has made to later production MW-54's, this will give me an extra 2 lbs of thrust - up to 14!

Nony,
I was speaking with Sara regarding the upgrading of my MKII kit to the new MKIII specs. I would (as well as the tailcone) need the new compressor and matching inlet. 2 extra lbs thrust would be cool with the AV8R... but it does fly pretty good allready, so I havent decided if spending the 135 pounds is worth it or not... would give me a 1:1 power to weight though after 1/2 the flight (when the fuel is about 1/2 gone), which would be really fun..

How goes the balance process?

What does your AV8R weigh??? what size servos did you use?? I emailed PCM twice but no answer yet...bet he is at Superman this weekend.

Talking with Sara, I found that my 54 has all the new stuff except the tailcone. Except for the shiny case, it will essentially be a MkIII.

Balancing is on hold..I am getting close, which means that every little grain of metal removed makes a difference...so stress and nerousness goes up as well.

I have to get back to the AV8R..I put it aside to hit the last 2 big flying events of the year.........

All up weight (including the 3/4 pound lead needed for noseweight) is 13 pounds, 15 ounces.

It flies great as is, but nothing wrong with a little more, right??

Sorry... I have Hitec HS 5645 digitals on each aileron and one for the elevator. I have one HS 605 for each flap and one 605 running both rudders. Steering servo is a HS 425, HS 81 to drive the brake valve.

I am running a 4 cell 1400 mAh flight pack, and a 2400 mAh 5 cell pack for my turbine controler. Both packs as well as the lead are up in the nose.

Unfortunately, when I built my Wren kit, I decided to spot weld two tabs directly onto the outer case, in order to mount in my Reaper. On the AV8R, due to the strap method, I couldnt do it! So I had to make up a wood mount, which adds weight to the rear end, and causes quite a bit of drag. But, it flies none the less...

Thanks for the info Andrew.. I'm certain mine will come out a bit heavier than yours with all the changes I am making to the nose...hopefully the weight will be in the right place......

I will start updating my building thread when I have something new to report.

Sheesh Andrew! I don't think you'll ever run into soft/sloppy controls with that servo configuration!!! I use the non-digital version of the 5646MG (the 645MG) on my Hotspot and Stingray Speed brakes. It's a tremendously powerful servo... You may be able to source a lighter weight option (although not by a great deal) and it might make your controls a little more agile with the quicker response time.

I was planning to HS-81's for some less critical functions, but after having a few that centered very poorly I've switched to the 225 for retracts/brakes and the 225MG for nose gear steering. I might go as far as to use an HS-81 on a smoke pump switch, but not much else in a jet...

Back on topic now, Wayne, lets see some more engine pictures...

Faster control?? Dont need it.. the 5645's are plenty fast..

I had them on hand, they came out of a larger gas plane I flew for a year and a half then sold. They seem to be just fine for the AV8R (I like overkill in servos).

Now I am thinking about upgrading my engine to MKIII again....

Stop thinking about it and just do it. You (and everyone else in this forum ) know its the right thing to do...

I considered the same perplexing dilemma for a while with my PST J600... I was having it checked out before the flying season and did the 600R upgrade just because I could. Playing with the Stingray and an additional 2 lb of thrust at Princeton was a blast. I think it goes 1:1 at around 1/3rd tank now!
