Something I'm doing a little different on this build is reinforcing the TE of the ailerons with some 6k CF tow. I've been doing a little experimenting and this reinforcement stiffens up the ailerons significantly (they were already very rigid though).

I clamped the TE between my aluminum straight-edges and then sanded a small groove in the foam about 1/32" deep, then laid in the tow and wetted it with some thinned finishing resin. Total weight added was only 4 grams, but it's like having a peice of steel angle-iron on the TE.

Once this cures, I'll glue on the 3/8" balsa TE stock and no-one will ever know the CF is there.

So why do this if the ailerons are already rigid???

1) The TE will be absolutely perfectly straight and will never go out of shape

2) We used the 3M 30NF glue for the skin lamination and I want that glue to only be used to hold the balsa sheeting tight to the foam so that the balsa can be most effective in tension for wing / aileron strength - for 4 grams of additional weight, why not let the CF stiffen up the TE and reduce stresses in the 3M 30NF. Therefore, just a precautionary measure to make sure this is a 1000+ flight airplane!

If I had used Ultimate glue for the sheeting lamination, I would have fore-gone this stiffening, but we'd also have an extra 3/4 of a pound in the plane due to the weight of Ultimate glue vs 3M 30NF.

No - that was my idea to get him cleaning and then I asked Jen to come in and check it out!! Caleb got major browny-points from Mom, I got browny points for looking after him and keeping the place clean, and he thinks my workshop is the coolest place around!

That's a win-win story!!!

I went to Toys'R'Us and picked him up a Home Depot workbench with little kids powertools and he told me that he'd now be able to help me build your plane - lucky you!!!!!!

Make sure you teach Caleb everything you know first and keep the hammer away from him just for now.

I think Caleb will be ready for Jack D's build!!!!

Hey Trev, i think you may have to start keeping your work shop door locked for a while. LOL...

Ya, but in parallel to my teachings, Jen has been teaching Caleb how to pick locks, so we're in trouble!!

The trick is to have a sacrificial lamb besides your build - last night I had my 42% Slick in the basement and my youngest son, Jacob decided to use the turtledeck and canopy as a
race track for his Hot Wheels cars - no damage but close call!!

Hope I'm making you guys nervous!!! (It's all good - my boys are very gentle and likely very few know all the airplane etiquette rules like them!!).

PS - Caleb tells me that the 58% Pitts build is his airplane!!!! Now I'm in real trouble!!!

Well I had a great day flying today and then said good bye to my Dietrich Slick 540. I was out flying the imac routine and as i did a snap the wing tube tore out of the left wing.

WHOA!!!! That sucks.

That's a wicked looking tear. Can't say I've ever seen something like that before.

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

I will be taking a very close look at in days to come to figure out why it let go. First thing i will be checking is the glue or the lack of, at the tube block and between the balsa sheeting on the foam core.

The rest of the equipment is fine.
