Ziroli P47 -installation of Ashlok connector for wing servos

I've been working on my Ziroli P-47 and I'm at the point where I need to mount the servos and run all of the servo extensions before I sheet the top of the wing. Because I'm at this point, I figured it would be a good time to show a "real" installation of 12 way (4 servo) Ashlok connector. (I have received many questions about Ashlok connectors, especially the 12 way (4 servo) type.)

A little background: This plane is the larger Ziroli P-47 (92" wing). It will be a bubbletop version. I'm planning to use a Zenoah G-62 for power. I'm also using the Robart gear that was designed for this plane.

Here are some pics...

More pics of the installation...

Servos are mounted and the servo extensions are feed through the paper tubes that run to the center of the wing.

Once all servo extensions are feed through the paper tubes, you can install the Ashlok Connector...

I'm skipping the part about actually crimping the pins on the wire, etc as that is covered here in my tutorial: http://www.thunderboltrc.com/ashlok/...pTutorial.html

Finishing the other half of the wing.

After this is complete, I will have one connector that will join the fuse to the wing. This connector is positive locking so it will not separate and it is keyed so that I cannot connect it backwards.

The wires in the Male 12 way (4 servo) Ashlok connector are configured so that the outside wire sets are for the ailerons and the inside wire sets are for the flaps...

On the fuse side, I have to build a Female 12 way (4 servo) connector that will use servo extensions to plug into my receiver.

I will use 2 Y-harnesses (1 for the ailerons, and 1 for the flaps)

Here are the 12 way (4 servo) Ashlok connectors joined with the Female portion leading to my receiver which will eventually be mounted in the Fuse.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Also you can visit my website for more details of all the products mentioned above.

Hi
I am building a TopFlite P-47 giant , 85 inch wingspan , also I m building a TopFlite P-51 giant , with a 84.5 in. wingspan .

Youre installation looks very neat , indeed . If I were to purchase a Kit of what I would need , would it be very expensive ? How much does it cost to do one plane , once the required tools are purchased ?

ThankYou for shareing

Michel

Michel,

Because each plane is different, I don't sell a "kit". The pricing for the Ashlok hardware is very reasonable. I believe that Ashlok connectors offer cheap insurance for anyone flying any plane of value.

Here is a breakdown of the costs associated with the installation in my Ziroli P-47. (Please keep in mind that these costs are based on the pricing at this time (Feb 200 and because some of these items come from Europe, pricing can change quickly due to currency fluctuations).

I used the following:

1 Male 12 way (4 servo) Ashlok connector - Price: $3.68 per pair (I have one left for another plane)

1 Female 12 way (4 servo) Ashlok connector - Price: $4.39 per pair (I have one left for another plane)

1 set of Male Ashlok pins - Price: $3.40 for 24 pins (I used 12 pins, so I have enough for another plane)

1 set of Male Ashlok pins - Price: $3.40 for 24 pins (I used 12 pins, so I have enough for another plane)

Total for the Ashlok hardware = $14.87 + tax and shipping. However this will give you enough Ashlok hardware to do 2 planes like the install above.

The only "special" tool you'll need is a crimp tool to crimp the pins on the wire. I sell a Ratchet Style crimp tool for $29.95 +tax and shipping (it is currently on sale right now for $28.45). You can also use any manual crimp tool that is designed for 20-24AWG wire and pins. The silicone wire that I use is 22AWG.

For the other items (servo extensions and servo wire wrap) here are the breakdown of costs:

I used 2 12" Thunderbolt R/C Heavy Duty Silicone Wire servo extensions - Price $3.30 each (Total $6.60 + tax and shipping)

I used 2 36" Thunderbolt R/C Heavy Duty Silicone Wire servo extensions - Price $4.50 each (Total $9.00 + tax and shipping)

I used 2 Thunderbolt R/C Heavy Duty Silicone Wire servo extension Y-Harnesses - Price $5.45 each (Total $10.90 + tax and shipping)

The servo extensions are required regardless of whether you go with the Ashlok connectors or not. The servo extensions that I supply are some of the nicest on the market. They are all silicone wire based and have gold plated pins, with nice fitting connectors. I have them available in various sizes ; 6", 12", 18", 24", 36" and Y-harnesses.

Servo Wire Wrap - 3/16" I used about 1 foot for the install. I sell it in 5 foot lengths (you can use it for other purposes - ignition wire wrap, etc) Price $2.25 + tax and shipping for 5 feet.

Servo Wire Wrap - 1/4" I used about 6inches for the install. I sell it in 5 foot lengths (this also works very well for wrapping your spark plug wire on gas engines). Price $3.15 + tax and shipping for 5 feet.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Grizak
