1/2a SST Electric Question

I am building a 1/2a SST which I am converting to electric and I'm sure some are familiar with this plane , 32" span , .049 engine ,21 to 26 oz weight . I would like to use a Rimfire motor with Silver Series esc. Could someone recommend a motor , esc ,battery [lipo ]combo that would provide good performance .I am new to electric [ but not to flying ] and have done some research but am not sure what would be best . I was thinking a 28 26 1600 with 25 A controller .

Re: 1/2a SST Electric Question

Hi Richard,

It might even be more than enough motor. You can compare to the EFlite 400 brushless
outrunner on the HorizonHobby website. For a speed control, I would look for a
Castle Creations Thunderbird 36 maybe for about the same price as the silver series.
The Lipo battery should probably be about 1350 maH in order to keep weight issues
down.

Re: 1/2a SST Electric Question

Would a 480 be better ? The 400 is rated for planes 10-20 oz. the 480 for 20-30.I'd like to go fast

Re: 1/2a SST Electric Question

480 would be overkill, so it should be just about right Keep in mind you may need to add ballast to the tail to balance properly with the 480. For this reAson i might lean towards a 450 size like the one you have, but hey, this is half the fun...makin' it work. Keep us posted on the build.

Re: 1/2a SST Electric Question

It is the symmetrical airfoil of the SST that will allow you to go fast along with keeping the weight down as I mentioned before. Use a smaller diameter prop for rpms
