Strut pin substitute?

Need to find some 6mm strut pins ... you know ... the pins that connect your landing gear struts to your electric retracts. LHS (Pinnacle ... A@J;s) that I called don't even know what I'm talking about! : Example here only I'd like them a little longer. I suspect if they don't even know what I'm talking about I'm gonna have a hard time finding them locally. Anything I can use as a substitute? Someone suggested drill blanks? If so where can I find those?

Colin

P.S. Need them in a relative hurry or I would just order them online!

Re: Strut pin substitute?

Hey Collin,

By 6mm strut pins, do you mean the pins are 6mm in diameter?

If so, maybe get some 6mm bolts that have unthreaded sections (shanks) on them that are at least as long as the pins you need. Cut head and threads off, then debur and slightly taper the ends. Suggest using bolts that are at least as hard as ones that are used for engine mounting. Soft ones might deform or crack.

Hope this helps.

Re: Strut pin substitute?

find motor shafts from EDF's or Electric motors. Or try these from Hobbyking....http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...g_Monster.html

Re: Strut pin substitute?

Grade 8 or better. Any bolt supply house or sometimes you can find them at Home Depot. Either use a hex head bolt or even use an allen head bolt.

Re: Strut pin substitute?

If all else fails, sacrifice a 6mm drill bit. Princess Auto is a place to start.

Re: Strut pin substitute?

They are called Clevis pins and are used on full size aircraft. They come in various sizes and lengths, usually inch sizes try Aircraft Spruce in Brampton. A lot of car carbs use those pins and clips, try the scrap yard.

Re: Strut pin substitute?

Looks like a 6mm dowel pin. Check hardware suppliers like brafasco and bolts plus. Or make some from 6mm drill rod from same suppliers.
