MDS 48 problem

The engine is now running around 3 hours. It runs well in low-idle and full-speed, but in between it is running bad. Sometimes it quits running, after a take-off ( Start with full-speed then go back to half-power ). Maybe the engines gets too much fill. It stuttered. That's not a good feeling, when you fly around the field. The needle has two turns.
Maybe somebody has a idea ?!

I am running two of these engines and they run with great regularity. This engine does not like high nitro, I use only 5% or FAI fuel. It may make a difference.

Are you using the glow plug that came with it? If so, change it. The manual states that this is a short lived plug.

The Glow Plug is not more bad. They install a han3011(Hangar 9) 4-stroke Glow Plug, when their deliver it.

Well, I just went to their web site and downloaded the manual for the 48 and they say,
"Your MDS engine comes complete with a long reach glow plug with idle bar. These plugs are designed for break-in only, and it's common for these plugs to burn out within several runs of the engine. Their use should provide you with quick starts and reliable idle during the break-in process. The stock break-in MDS glow plug may be replaced with Hangar 9's economy plug (HAN3005) or 2-cycle performance plug (HAN3000)."

This is a direct quote from the current manual.
I know in my case I changed the plug after just a few runs. Currently I have about 5 or 6 MDS engines and am fairly happy with them.

My Instruction is from 2002. On side 19 their wrote: Use the recommend glow plug (HAN3011 Superplug). So different are Instructions.
Their have deliverd the engine with a glow-plug w/o idel-bar. I have changed the nitro from 10 to 5 %. Slowly the engine is running better. So I hope after a few tankfillings more, it runs well. Guys from my club told me, when you have an ABC motor, you must be more patient. Maybe they are right.
Thanks for all the response !!!!!

If you still are experiencing plug burnout, it would seem you are running it too lean.

Ya ya, I know, you aren't. BUT my friend, I had the same problem and found a solution (leastways, I read one on another forum and it worked).

When you are setting up your engine, only fill the tank HALF FULL. Then set your needles. When you have it right, only THEN fill it up full and go fly.

Something about too much fuel causes it to lean out when it gets half done in flight. Worked for me. (MDS2.
