Floating flybar system for 250 and 500 HK heli

Time to start the new thread. The system I'm working on is based on the MSR floating flybar system with my own twist. It actually will not float but will be allowed to travel freely up and down by a roller bearing in a track that will be mounted vertical on the head block. The flybar will have weighted ends not paddles and will be dead simple in operation. I was going to start with the 250 but my 500 developed a nasty vibration and I have a torque tube on order for it. So because the 250 can almost fly at this point and the 500 can not I will make one for the 500 first. This is NOT going to be a 3D machine nor is the 250, scale is my only interest when it comes to RC helis. Here is a pic of my parts that will become a part of my new creation. I also made the mainshaft within .001 deflection and I just reminded myself that I need to mount the head block in the lathe to check for true.

Want to keep an eye on this one. Love to see a fellow tinkerer at work.

Re: Floating flybar system for 250 and 500 HK heli

Well I took pics of a NIP head block, then I thought why use new I've crashed enough there must be some usable parts around here. So I found a broken head block that will work and a just big enough chunk of aluminum. Now I was going to make a MSR style floating flybar but they do develop a problem with the toilet bowl effect and I figure it's due to the fact the flybar does float (get it toilet "floats" see the connection). So rather than a direct copy I will take some of the ideas and use them such as linkage design BUT rather than have the flybay one unit I will make two independant flybars. They won't be floating but like the MSR they will be aggressive in the effect they have on the blades. Here is a pic of what I will be using.

Re: Floating flybar system for 250 and 500 HK heli

So I started to machine the add on piece to make my MSR style flybar system. I measured the bore of the pitch slider and used that measurement to machine my piece for my new flybar system. If I was using two brain cells today I would have measured the mainshaft because that is where that piece was going. It ended up being about .020 too big, so now I have some spare scrap. I thought, well the main shaft on my 500 is dead true now, and I am waiting for a shaft drive tail to show up along with a four cell battery which I hope will improve the tail authority. So why take it apart at this time lets go back to the 250. I am now on plan "C" which uses two of the MSR design features and two that are all my own, which I believe no one has done before. I started machining that sleeve today and hope it goes better than the last one. The picture of the piece and lathe is the failed attempt, the pic of the piece and ruler is so far the good one for the 250.

More machining done, now it's taking shape.https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/atta...1&d=1325555927 This is the new head part done, what you see here is the bore that the main shaft will be put into. I'm still learning post so bear with me please.

How do you place pictures in line? You know describe something then put in the picture then carry on with more dialogue. Once I know what to do my post will be much better.

Here is the end the donor head is going into. I've machined it to .001" smaller than what the donor head will end up at. This other pic is the donor head in the lathe ready to be machined.

Re: Floating flybar system for 250 and 500 HK heli

The first picture is the two machined parts ready for assembley. This next picture is the start of the phasing collar and the head sleeve which has been machined to an exact fit, it slides on and off with a bit of resistance. The phasing collar will be outfitted with a couple of thumbscrews to hold it in line so it can be adjusted when testing starts. I found out with my four blade flybarred 600 head that this is the way to go because until it responds properly to inputs you need to tweak that thing just a tiny bit to make a big difference. More to come

Re: Floating flybar system for 250 and 500 HK heli

This is what the two pieces are end up like together. I would say I had a press fit of about .0015" because it took in the neighbourhood of about 300 to 500 pounds force to squeeze the Align head into my machined sleeve. At one point in had it about 1/8" from home then a little more frorce and it popped in all the way. The two bits were drilled, tapped and locktited in place so now the only way to get them apart is to destroy them. I now have to machine more but my vacation time is over and progress will be slower so I hope to have more before the weekend.
