Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion
Hey Nice work Sean. Very innovative ideas. Your scorpion looks great in Angels colors. Could you explain a little bit the process you use and materials to compound sand. Sure looks good.

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion
Thanks Alan. My only secret...call Peter! LOL.
I painted the model with PPG base coat/clear coat (I ca give you the numbers if you like). Then sanded with 1500 grit wet on an orbital sander. I used 3M Trizac paper. Is go rid of all the small dust specs and the orange peel from the clear. Those discs are 6" dia. I also used 3M 1500 wet paper on a foam block for the hard to reach areas. Compounding was done with 3" yellow foam pads (Chicago pneumatic I believe) and Menzurna 400 smooth gloss liquid. The pnuematic polishing tool came from harbor freight. This removed a lot of the 1500 grit scratches. I still have some so I could use another session with the compounding before polishing and waxing. Those steps should go pretty quickly as the sanding was rally the most time consuming bit.

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion
Alan, they are both pneumatic.
I primed, then painted white in the yellow areas, then yellow over the white. Then I masked all the yellow off with masks, tape, etc to spray all the blue. Then clear coated the entire airframe. It's the clear that got sanded. I did go through a couple spots but for the most part it worked out well. Hope that helps clarify?

Smoke is always deceiving on the ground but this is the same setup as my Futura so I'm confident it will present well in the sky.

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion
Alan,
Here is the compounding material I used. Next step will be to use the polish also shown I the picture. Different pads for each product.
