Saito FG 11
I brought my little Saito gas engine out of winter storage the other night and put her back in the air where she belongs. What a sweet engine! The more I run it the better I like it, dependable and so easy on fuel.
I set the plane down to help a club member with his plane, just left it on a tick over idle for about 8 minutes and when I picked up my transmitter it throttled right up. No hesitation - just go! 3 flights of about 15 minutes each and only used 1/3 of a 10 oz tank of pump gas. I really wish they made a 40 sized one for the smaller planes! Anyone else running gas Saitos?

Re: Saito FG 11
Interesting, I thought someone else may be running one. I guessed wrong.

Re: Saito FG 11
I wonder if you could use the new OS G5 plug in that motor and get rid of the extra weight of the ignition system. I do like the smaller gas engines because they run quite. Cheers Floyd

Re: Saito FG 11
Hey Mervin. I'm running an FG21 in a 4 star 120. It has about 40 flights in 2 different air frames and I am really starting to enjoy it. The carb is tricky and the engine didn't have the best idle or power in the beginning. After a considerable break in and a learning curve on the carb settings, It's really a sweet engine. Easily 2 flights on a 10 oz. tank with aerobatics included. I also have an FG36 and FG30B.

Re: Saito FG 11
I would love to own one of the smaller FG's!!! I enjoy hearing of your experiences with them. Having a few G20's, gas is so nice and easy!

Re: Saito FG 11
I suspect it would run with the OS 5G plug, but you may lose that nice all day dependable tick over idle. Depending on what you are using it for whether that is an issue or not. We were using mine last fall for glider work both as a tug and with a glider cradle. There can be some waiting time doing that depending on how many gliders you are servicing. Normally you shut down and restart each time but this engine is quite happy to just sit and tick away until we are ready for it. No loading up or sputtering at all.
Good to hear you are running Saito gas engines too Steve! Yes there was a learning curve. I found the low speed mixture adjustment very sensitive but the high speed needle is the opposite. It takes a 1/2 turn at a time to make any difference. Initially I was worried about how little oil these engines see, so I am religiously oiling it up after each day of use. Not just a shot in the carb but a good shot up the crankcase vent too as that does the bearings and valve train. I then flip it over a few times and store it upside down to let the oil work it's way up to the rocker arms. I started this thread to try and get a feel for how well these engines are catching on out there. I am a little afraid that Horizon Hobbies will drop them just like they have so many of my other favorite small Saito engines. As soon as I can get the cash together I plan to order a back up to have on hand in case they do.

Re: Saito FG 11
Nathan, I just acquired a 30cc airframe so now I have a use for my G26. I haven't run one of those before.

Re: Saito FG 11
We just tried a bit of cross country for the first time today. Put lawn chairs in the back of a pickup and away we went. I didn't time the flight but we drove about 8km one way then circled and came back. Including idling time it would have been about 24 minutes. A fuel check showed we used almost 1/3 of a 10 oz tank. That was done between 1/4 and 1/3 throttle, 40 km/hr there and 70 km/hr back.
We then flew the plane on the same tank for another 3/4 of an hour at similar throttle settings and landed with just under 1/2 a tank left. I suspect we have an easy hour and a half worth of fuel in this bird. One thing I did learn though is that going cross country is not as easy as I thought. My feeling was just trim it out and follow it. Not so! It took constant corrections to keep it on course. It might be different on a perfectly calm day. Next time I must remember to activate a timer.

Re: Saito FG 11
I have a FG11 on a 40 Elder and it runs just like you say . It uses about 2 oz. of fuel for a 12 min. flight . It idles forever without loading. Just hope the 14 will be as great as the 11 as I got one in a a 80" cub which I will be testing tomorrow. My first 4 stroke gas is my FG60 radial and that was a handful to get to run but it runs great now. It took over 3 hours on the bench to get it to idle and go full throttle. Have 13 flights on it right now and it is still breaking in. They sure eliminate the noise factor.

I have a .60 size profile fun fly kit I started building that it will go into. Might try and finish it this next winter for next seasons flying. I recall testing one of the Saito gassers (might have been the FG11) when I was working for Fly RC magazine, maybe 7 or 8 years ago when they came out. Was pretty impressed.
