Re: Astro Hog CG

33% is right although make sure it is slightly nose down. That model even slightly tail heavy is a handful on final.

Re: Astro Hog CG

Balance it where it says BALANCE point. That's why it's called the BALANCE point! For most airplanes, 33% is the most rearward point recommended. I wouldn't start there for initial flights. Experienced pilots sometimes prefer a more rearward C of G, but it makes the aircraft much more pitch sensitive. The Astro Hog has been around for 50 + years, go with SIG's recommended balance point. Oh, and BTW, it's much easier to balance a low wing airplane upside-down.

Cheers!

Re: Astro Hog CG

The Astro hog can be flown with a more rearward CG than recommended.... BUT BE WARNED!

If you like to spin, the 'Hog can get into a true flat spin that one cannot recover from no matter what you do! Trust me, thats how I lost my 1st one.

I was playing with the CG and seeing how far back I could get it. I used to spin it a lot. One day after making a change in CG position it went into the most beautifull flat spin, falling slowly (but fast enough to break the fuse in half). I couldnt recover with any rudder, down elev or change in throttle. The tail fins (and rudder in particular) are small and blanketed by the stab and ineffective. I wouldnt even try and spin the 2nd Hog I had.

GoodDad
The drawing show balance point (CG)
The drawing shows 33% of the wing root chord

Nowhere on the drawing does it say CG = the 33% position, it shows the two points are not the same.

Rule of thumb (for those at the field wanting to check CG and forgot the exact location) tank empty, 25% - 33% of the root chord of an unswept wing

Another suggestion: mark the CG on the fuselage or wing
