Rob - you did not exactly get spanked by the US guys. I just looked at your scores for individual maneuvers and I see lots of 8's and 9's. So I think you need a pat on the back my friend.

When I look at Chuck's scores I see a lot of 9's and some 10's. Wish I had been there to really see how they are flying these maneuvers to get 10's.

I worried about posting... I'm not saying the judges are getting it wrong, I'm saying it's up to the pilot to clearly demonstrate that they have stopped rolling at the point.

Again, if you make the pause almost nonexistent you open yourself up to the possibility that a judge decides you didn't stop which then becomes a zero. You can't say "but I felt my stick go to centre so I know it stopped." The judge has to see the plane stop rolling. That's their only reference.

Rick

Funny you should mention slower flying speed. I was actually thinking about this last night and want to tweak my throttle curve to get a slower cruising speed. What made me think of it was watching Greg fly his electric.

It's always been a goal of mine and I have adopted that style for many years.

It becomes another form of expo (sorta pilot expo). More time to think, makes things more methodical and smooth and potentially precise.

Joy Barrette's famous quote is "It's a Waltz not a break dance"

Interestingly it helps keep things quieter as well.

I set my curve so that my cruising speed is at 1/2- 5/8 stick position and cruising speed is about half of max airspeed.

Yes it's not just that it's electric but Greg also has excellent throttle control.

Mostly I think he's worried about running out of battery. (all in fun Greg)

Sadly it's the basics Bill, things I should have sorted out in Sportsman (1 point Rick). I am not at all disappointed in my performance I just seen some room for improvement... a lot!

I was watching closely and couldn't come up with deductions on Chuck!

Rick had put me on to all of this about a year ago and I went about half way with it. I was getting away with all the little things that you will never get away with at that level (that makes 2 for Rick)

Re: Cincinnati IMAC

This extra long pausing between points/elements. Could you say there is an excessive amount of line length between Points. It had been discussed a possibly a bad thing because you are creating a line within the maneuver. This was talked about with some rolling then snapping maneuvers in the upper classes, While at a us contest this spring.
I can say there should be happy medium and pace.

Re: Cincinnati IMAC

As I saw my name mentioned, I though I would chime in.

The way you see me flying has nothing to do with the fact that I am flying an electic setup. I have a motor in my 60cc Extra that could put out DA100 power if I wanted it to.

I flew a very similar style the last few years I was competing in pattern and with the 8 foot Extra I flew at the Las Vegas TOC in the early 90s. In both cases, I had glow motor that had more than enough power, but chose to fly level flight with about the power it takes to hover or torque roll the plane. Unless it gets really windy, it can be made to look quite smooth and graceful and the maneuvers size seems well proportioned to the size of the aircraft.

Currently I fly in a provincial park with strict overflight rules and the slower flight allows a smaller footprint so it works out quite well. In the advanced sequence, I even offset the roller and loop from center so that the following turnaround double humpty and 1/2 reverse cuban don"t get too far downwind. It seems a little strange to me as an old pattern flyer to offset the center maneuvers, but I think it is the best way to minimize the footprint and it should get a high airspace control score with the current IMAC rules.

Cheers - Greg

Re: Cincinnati IMAC

It's a great point of discussion Bryan.

Up till now we have been talking about one roll element (i.e. a "4 X 8") and the roll rate and pauses within that.

Inspired by Bryan my question is:

A full roll followed by an opposite full snap compared to a full roll followed by a same direction snap.

Let's say the roll rates are done identical in both cases.

What's everyone's view on the what happens between the full roll and the snap?

P.S. yes Chuck is/was that good. Rob flew very well. "They" just flew better.
