Pilots - I am very pleased to see our Chief Judge Ty Lyman initiate a series of judging articles and he posted the attached PDF on the IMAC subform Compete!

http://www.mini-iac.org/The-Hangar/g...Redbook-Review

This Redbook Review article covers many of the points we have been discussing on the other topic re Intermediate entry/exit.

Ty states very explicitly - which turnaround maneuvers are allowed and therefore what is not allowed.

Hopefully this will lead to a series of articles on topics that routinely come up in judging.

Re: Redbook Review Article

I had struggled with the half outside loop question as well until I took a close look at the permitted maneuvers. The rule says a half loop up or down with a half roll. If you finish the sequence inverted and push the outside half loop you then have to do a half roll at the top. You are now inverted and breaking the rule that says you can't fly around inverted....

Exactly Gord - I think we have to accept that sometimes we have allowed things that are not legal. I know Ty intends to try and do something for the next rules cycle to see if we can make the rules clearer.

Gordon and Bill:

I would imagine the half roll is only an option on the outside half loop making it not necessary at all. As you mentioned Gordon, flying around inverted from a cross box exit could be considered practice which is the reason for the turn around rules in the first place. Not doing the half roll would actually decrease the maneuvers done to get back to the start point for the next sequence and be less aerobatic in nature.

Just my thoughts on that one.

Brendan

Nope - that's the point - the half roll is not optional. People think it is optional because they are carrying forward the thought from the Half Cuban where 13.5 states that the half roll is optional. But if you read what it says about the half loop it is not optional - if you are going to do a Spilt S or Immelman as a turnaround you have to do the half roll on entry or exit - and only one half roll.

For sure Ty is going to look at this for the next rules change cycle, but that won't happen before the World's, so we need to make sure people don't get used to flying illegal maneuvers so they don't zero a sequence. We know that the World's will be single sequence rounds just like last time. So zeroing each sequence / round will not make for good scores.

Nope, there is no option when doing a half loop. It is a half loop with a half roll.

Yup - we both are in synch on that. The problem seems to be that in some maneuvers the half roll is optional but in the half loop it is not.

Looking forward to other articles from Ty.
