About Batteries

Hi,

I'm trying to get into electric flying for the 1st time in life. I've been flying nitros only. I don't know anything about it. Firstly I would like to know more about batteries and want to understand
What is meant by "1S", "2S"...."10S" batteries???
How to decided on which battery will be suitable for my kind of plane???
What ESC will be compatible. ???
How to determine how long the battery will last (flying time) ???
How to choose a charger ???
If any link that can provide info on this would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance.

Re: About Batteries

Qamar,
I'm sure those are all great sites, I myself learned quite a bit from rchelicopterfun.com.... Regardless if you're into planes or heli's.
I'll tell you the real basic stuff I've learned in the past year since I've gotten not the hobby. 1s or 2,3,4s etc... Is how many "cells" the lipo has. 1s = 1 cell and so on.
1s lipos are for smaller stuff, ultra micros.
3s lipos go in park flyers, warbirds etc....

Another important number on a lipo (well two really) are the two C numbers. The larger C number is for how much "punch" or power the battery can put out at upon request. The larger the C number, the more power it can put out. The other is for charging. Some batteries have a 1C charge rate, others have a 2,3, or 6 C (and so on...) charge rate. This means that if you have a 1000mah battery (which means 1 amp) you can only charge that battery at 1 amp. If you have a 2c charge rate, that same battery can be charged at 2 amps, and will charge faster.... And so on... So again, higher c the better

Esc's are broken into two categories, brushed and brushless. The size of what you need is dependent on what size of motor your have, and how much amps are going through it with a prop attached. Watt meter req'd.

Chargers... A lot of guys love hobbyking.com for all this stuff... Batteries/esc/motors... But for me, the charger was a big one. SAVINGS! My LHS wanted $75-150, for the same charger that I got for $23 on HK.
For what I'm into right now, I got a charger that charges 1s-6s lipos up to 6 amps.

so, really there's a lot to learn. I'm still learning as well... Kinda stuck on KV ratings on brushless motors. Just google, then read..... Google then read some more.

Go hang out with people that fly electric, that's your best place to learn.

Hope some of this helps!
