Next, onto the foam cores for the fuse!

I glued all my sheeting together with GreatPlanes wood glue, taped and let cure. I then took off the tape and sanded both sides of the sheets with a long sanding bar... the result was a perfectly smooth finish with no visible seams!!

A neat little trick given to me... before laying up your foam cores with the sheeting, glue on the 1/8" thick balsa skin to the ends of the cores (2nd picture). Once dry (3rd picture), layup your foam core with the balsa sheeting and Gorrilla glue. Once all is dry, sand the balsa sheeting down to the 1/8" thick balsa skin.

The result of this sequence (4th picture), is that you eliminate a very nasty seam in your finished fuse and you get a professional finish. You also integrate the 1/8" balsa skin into the build for a stronger join!

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Ok... now this is cool... your probably going to think that I've lost it, but this weight savings works great and doesn't sacrifice fuse strength (My 35% Carden Edge is done like this and it's bulletproof strong!).

Carden gives you (4) foam cores for the bottom of the fuse...
*(2) quarter panels - goes on each side of the motorbox
*(1) large belly pan
*(1) tail section

Quarter Panels... before installing, I hollowed the foam out... saved 1 oz!

Tail Section... will use 4 balsa stringers instead of the foam... will save 0.6 oz (in the tail!!)

Large Belly Pan... here's the cool part --> cut out the entire center section of the belly pan and replaced it with balsa sticks... saved 3.1 oz (most of this is behind the CG)... more pictures of the balsa sticks to come!

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Ok.. some more progress on the fuse... got the front quarterpanels blended into the fuse and motor box and also got the 1/4" balsa firewalls installed and sanded.

The instructions call for 1/4" balsa crossgrain behind the entire landing gear plate to fill this section in... I did it as per my Carden Edge and saved 0.6 oz.

In the 3rd picture, you can see the 3/8" square balsa bracing that closes in the belly pan. Also note the 1/8" balsa plates to distribute the forces into the foam cores.

Well... except for the tail area, the bottom is done!!!

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Wow... successful day again... got the turtledeck glued down and things are coming along really well on the hatch. I hollowed out the foam so far on the big, front section of the hatch and by doing so, removed another 3.1 oz!!

I still have to core out the foam in the instrument panel, so there's more weight savings to come.

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Just a little recap so far of the weight I've taken out of this build....

13.8 oz Motorbox lightening
1 oz F1, F2, F3 lightening (ears on motorbox)
2.8 oz Removal of fuse sheeting
0.5 oz Changed the detail on the stab mounting to reduce some hardwood (forgot to mention this)
1 oz Belly quarter panels (cored out the foam)
0.6 oz No foam on underside of tail - used balsa sticks (pics coming soon)
3.1 oz Removed center section on belly & replaced with balsa sticks
0.6 oz Didn't sheet the entire bottom, behind landing gear with 1/4" balsa
3.1 oz Cored out foam in front hatch section

TOTAL = 26.5 oz = 1.6 lbs of weight savings so far!!

But DO wait! No tabogan skis for this plane please!

Looks good Trev. I can see a Carden Yak build in your future!
