Re: 43% Carden Extra 300 - BBT - Build Thread

A bit more progress tonight.

The sides of the motorbox have been sheeted with 1/16 balsa and the canister mounts are in place and reinforced into the m-box.

Tomorrow, I'll install the sheeting at the rear of the canister tunnel that is curved to allow air to exit smoothly from the tunnel. I'll also paint on a light coating of finishing resin inside the tunnel once all the sheeting is in place.

Re: 43% Carden Extra 300 - BBT - Build Thread

Tunnel box is done!! I also gave the tunnel area a light coat of finishing resin to seal all the wood. The rounded back of the tunnel box should deflect the air out nicely. I'll cut out some vent holes in the 1/4" cross-grain balsa that goes across the bottom of the motorbox to finish off the bottom of the plane once the fuse is built.

The 43% plans call for 3/8" square basswood to be used as fillets in the corners of the motorbox. I picked up some medium density tri-stock balsa (similar to what's spec'd on the 40% Cardens) and saved 1.5oz!

I don't think I've ever seen a nicer fitting exhaust system! Nice choice Jack - every part spec'd so far is the best of the best!

Re: 43% Carden Extra 300 - BBT - Build Thread

To save weight vs conventional fuel tanks and in order to pick that perfect shape, Jack decided on a 2L pop bottle, which is 64oz.

I got the tank saddle done tonight using 1/16" light ply and stiffened it up with strips of Carbon Fiber on the wings of the saddles. Between the tab-lock motorbox, the tank saddles, and the canister mounts, this is the stiffest motorbox I have ever had the pleasure of building

Total weight of the finished motorbox, including tank mount and canister tunnel is 2lbs, 9.8oz !! For comparison, just the stock motorbox parts from my 40% Carden Edge were 2lbs 12oz, so this box would be probably 12-14oz lighter than a stock 40% box with a canister tunnel.

I'll give the motorbox a light sanding around the edges and then prepare to begin the fuse sides

Trevor the Graphtech gear showed today..Threw it on a scale, check out the weight difference to the original ..It actually looks fairly nice..It's rigid, yet it flexes..I think it'll work well..Soon to be in your hands
