Now if you know or have a similar Mentor lets honour them by letting them know that you apreaciate them. Lets hear from you guys about your mentors
I met Dave at the RC Soaring Nationals in the 70's. He introduced himself and we became friends in a matter of minutes. Dave had a wonderful deep voice, we exchanged audio cassette tapes through the mail to keep in touch for a few years. Great guy.
Thanks for reminding me of Dave.

Re: Mentors in our lifes

I grew up with a guy named Kevin Toth. He was into rc planes even as a kid. I remember seeing his builds and workshop and thinking "man, that is so cool" but never really imagining that I could be that into it. Kev is an airline pilot now and I haven't seen him in ages but he's still the guy I would credit as being a "mentor" to my hobby interests.

Re: Mentors in our lifes

I'm an odd duck; perhaps it's just in my last name. If I had to lay blame for my addiction it would be to a gentlemen whose first name I never knew and whose last name I can't spell, Rathbone (sp?) As a young guy (26 years ago) I caught a glance of a float plane that my neighbor beside my father's home was working on through his basement window! Many years later I remembered the tour he gave me of his shop. I moved to a larger town with a hobby store that stocked R/C planes. 13 years later I have never been happier with a great record of club involvement and odd love for the National Organization that helps us love this hobby. Funny thing, he passed away before either of us realized the impact that tour had on us.

Excellent thread, probably one of the best I have participated in.

Re: Mentors in our lifes

Hughesy, you have had an influence on me. This hobby teaches you more than just how to fly.

Alec + Stacy Conacher have also been mentors, even though I only get a couple of chances a year to fly with them.

Then there is Lester, from Lester's Hobbies. That gentleman has been there not just as my LHS but as a good friend I can rely on. He gave me my first taste of R/C flight with his trainer.

Still learning and growing and assume I'll continue to do so with the positive influences like that. Hopefully, paying it forward at some point.

Re: Mentors in our lifes

Mine was Harry Stacey. Once or twice a week and definitely on Friday nights we would enjoy a refreshment or two in his basement workshop with others. As a neophyte, I was amazed at the quality and quantity of his work. He could just about cover and dope a plane with his eyes closed. Any questions I had were answered and when I got stuck he was the debonder. Also he got me back up on the horse more than a few times when I fell off with a crash. His sometimes rough exterior hid a very soft heart. I sure miss him!

Re: Mentors in our lifes

Nicest thread I've perhaps ever read here! Mine was perhaps Hal Snow who was also my chief tech. and whose motto "Learn from every flight; that's experience" I still have on an engraved plate on my old flight box! There were others, Jimmy Connacher, the Masters brothers, and here in Canada, Denmac, Dennis, mentioned earlier.
