Piper J3 Canadian Reg

Hi - I'm in the middle of my 1/3 scale Nelitz Cub, and while I have tons of documentation and photographs, I would really like to do a Canadian registered aircraft - really tired of seeing Cubs with 'N' numbers.
I do have a couple of shots of one that was at Brampton some time back, but if anyone can suggest any others it would be great.
Obviously the pix I really need are for colour scheme and markings (plus any specific aircraft idiosyncracys) - so any suggestions as to a source would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike

Hello There:
In 1970 I owned this J-3 with two other follows. We had Just completely rebuilt it.
I was a AME at the time, this was one of the best J-3 s around.
I did like the Paint Job 100% dope.

Re: Piper J3 Canadian Reg

nice looking J3.

If your ever in Winnipeg, take a ride out to the Springfield flying club (east end of the city) last time we flew in there for a bbq there were 4 or 5 J3's there, all in very nice shape.

Re: Piper J3 Canadian Reg

Thanks for the info - I was aware of airliners.net but not of airport-data.com - pretty useful sites. Found a couple of cubs that might well do, but now need to get a little more than the single pic that's on either site.
Unfortunately, most of the shots appear to have been taken at airshows, so any others from the photographer in question are of a bunch of other aircraft.
Did go onto the DOT aircraft registration site, and now have a couple of the owners names so perhaps I can make contact and either source, or be able to shoot some extras.

Great job on the Cub rebuild Larry - it looks really nice - and although would make a really interesting, different model, I do want a 'traditional' yellow version.

So the hunt continues....

Thanks all,
Cheers, Mike

Smile Re: Piper J3 Canadian Reg

Hi Mike,

Here are some pictures of a J3 I used to own. It was a 1946 J-3 C65 S/N 13601. I believe the plane is currently based at Burlington Airpark.

If you decided to finish yours up like mine, I would love to see a picture. Let me know if you need any other details.

I has been a while since I looked at these pictures. It kind of makes me nostalgic. I miss sneaking out on a beautiful summer evening and shooting a few circuits!

Andy

Re: Piper J3 Canadian Reg

Hi Andy - thanks for the pix - what a lovely Cub.
I'm working through a couple of options right now, but I'll certainly keep you in the loop as this progresses, and when I decide which one I'm going to do.

Currently the 1/3 scale version is 'in the bones', with all the flying surfaces basically completed, and the fuselage is perhaps 30% done, so another month or two should see it nearing the time when one commits to the finer details.
Fortunately, being a Cub, basically they are largely the same....

Thanks again - really appreciate it.
Cheers, Mike

Re: Piper J3 Canadian Reg

When I was looking for a prototype Cub, I visited local small airports and flying fields. There are plenty out there.
You may be right that Cubs are basically the same, but if you look closely at all the details, it is amazing how many differences there are. For example: there are many cowl scoop variations on the Super Cub.

I believe that Bob Banka's Aircraft Documentation has a couple of Cub's with Canadian Registration.

Absolutely, and yes they all vary in little details, but essentially structurally and dimensionally they are the same so my basic building can happily proceed in the meanwhile - but I have I think, found an excellent one with a few personal touches to make it just that little bit unique.

With the season, of course many Cubs currently are lurking deep in their dens - however having followed up some of the pic sources mentioned earlier in this thread, I checked out the Canadian Aircraft registration database, and I have been in contact with several of the owners - I am blown away by how much interest and kindness they've shown. From pictures, to offers of access, to offers to fly over to where I am - it's amazing. As one of the owners said - "Hey, we're always looking for an excuse to fly.."

Many thanks for all the help,
Mike
