Proper volt rating for 6 cell nimh..

Just wondering something here,...

I purchased in an Elite 1500 Nimh 6 cell pack from www.cheapbatterypacks.com and when I went to test it out, I tested it in my charger first (bad move?... maybe).

The charger I have is the Dynamite Vision Peak Ultra .....
http://dynamiterc.com/Products/Defau...ProdID=DYN4053

So I went to test out the volts on the pack by plugging it into my charger I could almost instantly smell something and then a second later I heard a short " poof / puff " sound from the pack and immediately shut it down. Turned on the charger again w/o pack and everything seems okie dokie with the charger.

So after that, I tested out the other 2 packs I purchased (same cell type) and they were both posting a 7.5v rating on my multimeter. Which compared to my original pack was about right amount of voltage.

Back to my problem pack....

So when you hookup pos/pos and neg/neg I get a minus 7.0v rating and then when i go pos/neg and then neg/pos, I get a postive 7.0v rating. Would the cell be toast if its only posting a 7.0v rating vs 7.5v rating as the other packs?

The one pack in question has never been installed into a car I only received the pack this past Monday.

thanks for any help on this.

the poofs are not good, sounds like the pack is wired backwards from the manufacturer, either send it back to them and ask for a replacement or cut the wires and switch the polarity to make it correct

Forgot to add. I would assume they also built the pack wrong to begin with since its posting a negative reading when it should be posting a postive reading.

Another thing... why can't I edit my messages in the general section?

Well its a custom pack maker from an online webpage. So I would imagine a person would have had to build the pack as they are ordered.

Agreed, that small puff sound didnt sound good.

The owner of the webpage recommended I send it back or swap the wires as you mentioned. I would be tempted to cut open the pack to make sure it was even built correctly from cell to cell. I dont know why they used black shrink vs clear.

Any known problems if the pack is only producing 7.0v? If a cell was completely dead would the pack read nothing or would it only read around 6.0v..?

is this normal looking

Ok .. so I cracked open the casing of my battery ....

found this .....

Is it just me or is that battery .. ummm how would I say it ... missing a bar .. ROFL! Plus of course its soldered on the wrong end to begin with.

So a note to any newbs (like me) .. always, always, always check any new batteries you make OR purchase with a multimeter first rather then testing with your charger.

updating my post...

According to mike @ CBP the entire can is negative (did not know that) and what I have wired up is proper, except that the builder reversed the plugs by mistake.

lets hope it works and doesnt blow up

Updating again:

Ok I have the plug soldered back onto the pack on the proper polarity this time around. I drained off the remaining battery power and went to recharge it again.

Could someone chime in and shed some light on this ..

Elite 1500mah 6 cell pack
Charged at .50 (aka 500mah)
Charge stopped at exactly 2hours
Pack reads around 8.65-8.70v (or whatever it was on the charger voltmeter).

If it ended after 2hours, would that not mean it only received 850mah? (approx)... and it really should have taken around 3.6hrs to complete???

new batteries dont take full charge until you cycle it a few times. just keep running it and overtime it should have better capacity.

Yeah that is true enough. I just thought they would have accepted a longer charge.

So as long as the pack is reading about 8.5v (or so) then that would mean that all cells are still good?
